With QR's second A380 taking to the air today, we now have 26 first flights this year, beating the previous best of 25 reached in 2011 and 2012.

We should get to around 30 first flights by year-end.

Not entirely. The open slots in 2015 are production slots, not delivery slots. This basically means that Airbus will have to find a customer for a convoy at the end of 2015 (and delivery in 2016).

Not sure about that. In the media, the slots have been referred to as delivery slots as well as production slots.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-0...rs-for-delivery-slots-in-2015.html
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/...s-forecast-a-idUSL5N0HK1QU20130924

The convoy schedule indicates that Airbus continues to plan, for the time being, on the basis of a production rate of 30 frames per year. However, this does not necessarily say anything about the end-2015 slots, since at current "problem-free" production speeds (about 9 months from convoy to delivery), frames for end-2015 delivery would be convoyed in early-2015.

Fresh news on this, in which the open "production slots" are once again linked to 2015 deliveries:

Fantastic pictures! Great find and thanks for posting.

But as beautiful as these pictures are, they also give us quite a clue why the A380 is so time consuming to get the cabin interior installed completely.

As much as I do like all these beautiful concepts, to go with a more standardised catalog on the A350 seems like a wise decision Airbus has made. And those airlines really wanting something different on the A350 (like LH) they will do the cabin interior themselves.  .

IMO all those luxury options like showers do not fit in today's economic world. And less options would make assembly much easier indeed.

@ KarelXWB, @ Art: waow, that's interesting and it fits to what we discussed in the last weeks. Airbus improving the A 380 step by step rather than making a complete update, let alone a new version.

I can't wait to see the design for the winglets. Will they look similiar to the A 350? Or rather like the 777's raked winglets? Or maybe even folding wingtips?

I guess they will test the new winglets on MSN 001 or 004 as they did for the A 320.

Still a new version is to be expected with an EIS just after 2020 or so. Until that time following an A330 continues development and improvement program seems like a wise course to follow. Especially if they would end up just as successful as the A330 has been.  .

Well, a step by step (evolutionary) redesign would most likely end up with winglets like the A350. The raked wingtips as used by Boeing are unlikely since they are a Boeing patent and fit perfectly to the wing design philosophy of Boeing. Airbus designs and builds their wings differently, where other wing tip solutions will have other (better) effects.

I would think that a new variant would have to tie in with the engine upgrade. I don't see the engine OEMs doing a major upgrade (10% less SFC) and then have Airbus add a new version of the aircraft and presumably change the engine requirements again. I would expect it in unison.

As for why Emirates will not take the open slots in 2015:

Quote:
The sale does not immediately resolve a problem of what to do with an estimated 5 A380 aircraft remaining to be sold in 2015, for which the first parts must soon be ordered.

Emirates is unlikely to take delivery of those since they do not fit its schedule for introducing a complex new in-flight entertainment system, which must be planned well ahead.
