Difference Now Between SEA Vs PDX For DL Hub

Wed Nov 13, 2013 5:06 pm

As DL begins to focus on increasing service to/from SEA domestically--the frequent flyers of both AS/DL are winning as the carriers spar. On many of the routes where they are now head-to-head each of the respective carrier gives double miles if ticketed by 12/31. My question is, this sparring will only last so long before it becomes a blood bath. Is this wise for DL when AS could really surrport their international operations? And what's the difference from the OLD PDX hub w/Asia and a few selected domestic routes, verses the new build-up with Asia/EU and a few sporadic domestic routes. Isn't this the same dance, just a different song?

SEA - waaaay more O&D to work with than PDX, to begin with.
SEA - tons more feed into the DL network than they ever had at PDX. Was the DL/AS codeshare in place back then?
SEA - not a customs nightmare like PDX used to have which really gave it a terrible reputation among potential passengers.

I don't think the codeshare was in place with AS back then accept for a few cities if any.

The Delta hub to PDX was not based on O&D between PDX and the various Asian cities it served. Rather, it was because Delta lacked the long-range aircraft from any of its hubs at the time (SLC, DFW, CVG and ATL) to serve the Asian markets nonstop. The strength of the Asian Tigers in the 1990's and the need to serve Japan created an incentive to build up Portland as Delta's transpacific gateway hub.

That need eventually lost economic value after the Asian Crisis in the late 1990's, and became more irrelevant once DL acquired long-range a/c to fly nonstop from ATL to Japan/Korea/China and, of course, the NW merger.

More details here.

The feed from Alaska alone is a huge difference. Almost everyone needed a double connection. PDX was cool but they just didnt have the feed to make it work.

Although SEA doesn't have the "deportland" reputation, peak-hour FIS capacity is going to be a constraint for DL for the foreseeable future. The concourse A international arrivals hall expansion project is still in the drawing board phase right now, so at least ~3-5 years with the status quo.

What was the issue here? I flew into PDX in 2009 and it wasn't a noticeable pain....

Firstly, 2009 was long after the DL gateway operation had wound down, and Portland was referred to as dePortland. People with foreign passports were denied entry to the US at a higher rate than any other in the US.

So far not the domestic build up yet, below is a pretty accurate list of domestic cities covered by DL at PDXs peak.
remember that several domestic cities had bigger aircraft than DL now uses, ATL & CVG had M11s, several cities had 763s, 757s and then the rest were 72S, 733 or CRJ.

The only one you missed was BOI which was operated by OO on a CRJ, I took that flight once and it was well timed for all the International connections.

I worded that poorly. I was taking into consideration the DL feed as well as the AS codeshare feed.

OK, with AS, DL has way more feed at SEA than they ever had at PDX, but I venture to say DL will not have the same lift on their own metal, than PDX enjoyed during the peak. Maybe not ever, but for quite some time.

I remember the whole of D terminal was covered with DL planes, with 5 M11s all around the very end of D, what a sight it was, spotting on Marine drive, I loved watching the M11s leave one after another, the take offs were great, inside and outside those awesome aircraft.

At one time, you could spot DL M11, L10, L15, 762, 763, 757, 733, 72S & CRJ aircraft all here at PDX .... I miss those days
