Additional Beyond-Perimeter Slots?

I know that LGA doesn't have beyond-perimeter slots, except maybe Saturdays. But with the concessions AA/US will be making at DCA, will the DOT add more beyond-perimeter slots?

VX LAX-DCA
AS SAN-DCA
etc.

Could the DOT add more, yes. Will it be part of the AA/US merger, no. So to respond to what some are saying, VX and AS would have to fly with in perimeter to get some of the slots from the merger.

I don't think the DOT can make this decision on its own. Congress has to pass a law to that effect.

Two separate issues. AA/US are not surrendering any of their beyond perimeter slots. If/when the feds decide to open up more, they will add some at that time. I believe once merged, the combined AA/US will have most of the beyond perimeter slots: LAX, PHX (2), SAN and LAS.

And I posted (on another thread yesterday) wondering if the DOT might hold back a few of the surrendered slots of AA/US slots for the eventual (and probable) next Beyond-Perimeter hearing. There always seem to be an element claiming that DCA is pretty much at maximum usage and there shouldn't really be any more flights permitted. (I remember this was brought up last year during that Beyond-Perimeter hearing, I think by the DCA Airport folks.)

I doubt there will be any new beyond perimeter flights any time soon. MWAA might be asking for a bit of a hold on these as the US/AA merger and introduction of more/new LCC/ULCC flights likely will have a depressive affect on demand for domestic travel to IAD. once they have a chance to retrench, then you might see more, but not for several years.

Remember, the entire point of the perimeter rule and side benefit of slot control was to make sure IAD was able to get enough traffic when it came online in the 60s. So protecting IAD should be a concern for MWAA and DOT.

I believe that the PHX and LAS slots are locked and cannot change. I think it was discussed when AA got LAX and US got SAN that those slots could be used wherever the carrier saw fit to use them.

   My understanding is the same as yours; the PHX and LAS awards are from an older hearing and do not have the built in flexibility of last year's awards.

I can't see AA ever changing their LAX-DCA choice and I certainly hope they leave the SAN-DCA route where it is. (And I really don't see any reason that they would move it.)

Definitely a possibility i would think. They could still fly PHX2x and free up a slot for SFO or LAX.
