Global Airways To Start JNB-MIA?

Thu Nov 14, 2013 12:35 pm

So I came across a couple articles stating that Global Airways is going to announce JNB-MIA via CPT in 2013 or early 2014.

The route will be 4 weekly on a A330

In a statement, Global Airways says its renewed 4x weekly service to Miami will begin in either late 2013 or early 2014 using an Airbus A330. It claims the route operated successfully up until 2004 when "political commitments terminated the service".

I have no comment. This is really weird news. Maybe it will work, maybe not.

Thoughts?

Quoting Miami (Thread starter):

I doubt any 330 would be able to operate the route non-stop w/o significant penalties, that would render the route unviable. I know on the AA MIA-JNB thread, questions were raised about the 77Ws ability to make JNB-MIA non-stop, with a meaningful payload, so the thought of a CPT stop helps, but with any of the 330 variants, is it really possible?

Hi all,

Rumour has it that this will operate via Ilha do Sal (SID) Cape verde, and not Cape Town. This would make the route possible on a 330, BUT, I am still rather dubious at the whole operation.

According to Global's Wikipedia article, the service was "announced" in August. Have heard nothing official from the aviation department.

Right. There was a very extensive discussion on that possibility a few weeks ago.

So how is an unknown airline from Africa going to compete with a legacy mega carrier like AA? When AA will be non-stop on a 77W vs a one-stop service via SID? Super low fares? That will hurt the yields for AA if they choose to start the route, which I think is long overdue. I hope AA grows MIA even further.
