MH's Fleet Replacement Strategy For Its 772ERs

There have been some on-going discussions about how MH is going to replace its ageing Boeing 777-200ERs. MH currently has 15 772ERs after retiring 2 of them.

At first, MH is considering the A330-300HGW to replace them to promote fleet commonality but due to its limited range, it may not be the best option for long-haul missions such as Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Los Angeles due to payload restrictions.

Above is the link to an article which indicates that MH is in the middle of making decisions on its fleet replacement strategy for the next few years. It is important to bear in mind that MH plans to retire all its 772ERs by 2016 when the lease expires.

There are a few key issues which may be worth highlighting:


1. Is MH going to buy or lease the replacement aircrafts? It seems that MH has been aiming to own more airplanes in its fleet.

2. Is it possible for MH to take Air Asia's delivery slots for the A350XWB given the long order list?

3. What is MH going to do with its options for 10 A330-300s? Is MH going to convert the options into firm orders? (Lately MH has increased the frequency of its flights to major Australian cities like Sydney and Melbourne after the bilateral agreement has been expanded.)

4. There have been rumours that MH is ordering 2 additional A380-800s.

5. Is it true that MH will not be considering any Boeing wide-body jets in the future? If this is the case, then the A350XWB is likely to be chosen.

An A330-300 to A350-900 conversion seems the most logical option to me.

The article mentions that they are looking to start receiving aircraft in 2017. That sounds like a A330/A350 combination to me. The 787-10 has a shot as MH's routes/cargo are not that intensive but KUL-AMS with cargo is a little on the high side of this regional a/c even if MH had a propensity toward Boeing which it does not appear that they do.

Airbus' to lose in my opinion.

Hi trex8,

A good question - this is only a speculation, there are no other ways for MH to get the planes delivered by 2017 if it eventually decides to go for the A350XWB (other than leasing them). Some time ago, both MH and Air Asia have had a 'Comprehensive Collaborative Framework' (CCF) which is now aborted. Assuming that the CCF did go through, this option might have been possible.

Except that the A350 is sold out until 2020.

The only way to get A350s in 2017 is by leasing them.

They can also renew some leases for say 6 777s til about 2018 to bridge the gap on routes like AMS and FRA until the 350s are delivered.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?
