There have been some on-going discussions about how MH is going to replace its ageing Boeing 777-200ERs. MH currently has 15 772ERs after retiring 2 of them.
At first, MH is considering the A330-300HGW to replace them to promote fleet commonality but due to its limited range, it may not be the best option for long-haul missions such as Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Los Angeles due to payload restrictions.
Above is the link to an article which indicates that MH is in the middle of making decisions on its fleet replacement strategy for the next few years. It is important to bear in mind that MH plans to retire all its 772ERs by 2016 when the lease expires.
There are a few key issues which may be worth highlighting:
1. Is MH going to buy or lease the replacement aircrafts? It seems that MH has been aiming to own more airplanes in its fleet.
2. Is it possible for MH to take Air Asia's delivery slots for the A350XWB given the long order list?
3. What is MH going to do with its options for 10 A330-300s? Is MH going to convert the options into firm orders? (Lately MH has increased the frequency of its flights to major Australian cities like Sydney and Melbourne after the bilateral agreement has been expanded.)
4. There have been rumours that MH is ordering 2 additional A380-800s.
5. Is it true that MH will not be considering any Boeing wide-body jets in the future? If this is the case, then the A350XWB is likely to be chosen.
