Delta Last DC-9 Flight Jan 6, 2014 MSP-ATL

Please post any information here related to the DL DC-9 retirement and final flight(s) so we can avoid multiple threads. The last thread on this had a lot of outdated information to read through. Here are the most recent (a week ago) pertinent posts on that thread:

Quoting yyz717 (Reply 162):
N774NC was stored on Nov 7th.

Now only 14 D95's active.

Delta Last DC-9 Flight Jan 6, 2014 MSP-ATL

Tue Nov 19, 2013 2:32 am

Right now the last flights loaded to the schedule that are shown to be operated by DC-9-50 are on Sunday Jan 5th.

However, multiple sources are saying Jan 7th. That could mean any of the following:

a) revised schedules with additional DC-9 flying on 1/6 & 1/7 have not yet been loaded
b) DC-9 flying on 1/6 and 1/7 will be ad-hoc / equipment substitutions
c) the last revenue flights will be on 1/5, and operations on 1/6 and 1/7 will ferry flights to the desert (MZJ)

With the current schedule though it shows some flights on the evening of Sunday 1/5 going to outstations from ATL, but no scheduled return on 1/6. So stay tuned.

The ferry flights to the desert should show up in various websites. I'll have to tap some of my pilot friends about who/when/where they will be going. They tend not to linger long on the ramp after being deactivated. Ramp space is valuable real estate.

Sometimes they use training pilots to ferry them down, other times just regular line pilots. It is my understanding the trips just show up on their open flying board for them to grab.

I'll be curious to see if the airplanes are withdrawn in ATL or MSP. Before ferrying, various items are stripped out and returned to stores (like some coffeemakers, first aid kits, medical kits, etc).

I wonder if DL will have a "retirement flight" for employees, retirees and families like they did with the 747-200. We flew N624US out to BFI and had a blast!

They have been ferrying them out mostly from ATL. A few DC-9-50s in 2011 and 2012 went from DTW, but they have all been going from ATL lately and the last revenue trips all will end in ATL. MSP doesn't get DC-9 service anyone expect for a few one-off flights and doesn't appear to have anymore scheduled.

OK, the old DC9s will be gone, but the relationship between Delta and the DC9 will continue for many, many years, between the MD88, MD90 and 717,

Also, in 2015, it will be 50 years since Delta introduced the DC9; I can't think of any airline that has marked 50 years of service with a particular aircraft.

Both great points. Fifty years is a remarkable career--I don't think the DC-3 even saw service with the same company for that length of time. The legacy will live on.

The Delta desktop e-timetable is now showing the 6 Jan 14 schedule change. I have found 19 DC9-50 flights on 6 Jan but, none on 7 Jan. There is one circle routing ATL-MKE-DTW-MSP-ATL arriving in ATL at 10:47 PM. The others are back after RON or out-and-back ATL: BHM, BNA, CLE(2), CLT(2), ECP, GSO, HSV, JAN, LIT(2), ORD, SAV, TLH. The second CLE arrives at 8:52 PM

*Beaten to it* ^^^

The schedule is definitely fluid yet. For example ATL-GSO was showing an outbound DC-95 late on the 5th with no return, but now the schedule shows a return early on the 6th. I haven't found any other changes yet, but I imagine we'll see more changes soon. Obviously we won't be seeing a DC-95 leave ATL one night and magically return as an MD-88.

If that circle route is indeed the last flight, which is appears for now, that would be very cool.
A fitting tribute to honor the NW heritage by could through the hubs one last time.

Sure looks like it, check out the flight numbers:

DL 2475 ATL MKE 10:51 11:58 D95
DL 1631 MKE DTW 12:35 14:26 D95
DL 1965 DTW MSP 15:39 16:43 D95
DL 2014 MSP ATL 19:20 20:47 D95

Flight 1965 - Flight 2014. Looks like there could be quite the party in MSP, with 2.5 hours of ground time.

It's impressive but not quite accurate. Unless you are counting the MD-80/-90, the DC-9 was not in continuous service with DL. They phased them out, and then later reintroduced them from the NW merger. The legacy DC-9 was not then in continuous service with DL.

So how does it get determined whether the aircraft comes back to ATL on 6 Jan after RON? There is an ATL-AVL DC-9 flight on the night of the 5th, but no return. (The return flight on the morning of the 6th is an MD-88.) Presumably the equipment isn't needed in ATL the next day and will fly straight to the desert.

A new schedule was pushed out to the electronic timetable today, that will be reflected on delta.com on Saturday which changed all of that.

AVLs last DC-9 flight will be the launch flight on Sunday morning 1/5 to ATL. The Sunday night RON and beyong in AVL is now an MD88.
There no longer appear to be any "orphan" RON flight, that were evident before this schedule update.
The routings on Monday 1/6 all are RONs inbound to ATL or out-and-back from ATL, with the exception of the circle flight ATL-MKE-DTW-MSP-ATL.

Aircraft will not fly straight to the desert from outstations, and all aircraft need to go through a storage/retirement prep and equipment removal.

Right now Monday 1/6 DL 2014 MSP-ATL appears to be the last DC-9-50 revenue flight as loaded into the newly released schedule.

Are they not selling tickets yet/at all? I tried to book both a triangle routing out of BNA where I live and just a one-way MSP-ATL ticket on delta.com and it shows a 19:15 MD-88 on the route but not a DC-9 nor a 19:20 departure nor a flight 2014.

I was on UA's very last 737 flight LAX-SFO (obviously before the CO merger) and would like to be a part of this farewell too.

Darn! I am booked on Flight 1667 from ORD to ATL on January 5, since I thought that would be the last DC-9 flight. I know, I should have waited. But the price was going up almost daily and availability was going down, so I figured I would gamble and take it. Well anyway, it will be MY last DC-9 flight.

Would really like to tag on a connection out of ATL otherwise the MSP-ATL flight is gonna be brutally expensive. TPA or RSW or something maybe.

Probably safe to book flight 721 right now as it will likely turn into flight 2014. Price is not bad at $159. I don't really see any tag options to get the price down further. The flight arrives too late to often many connecting options.

What a great way to end an honorable airplane. When NW merged with RC all of us NW f/a's had to be trained on the DC-9 and MD-80--I was based at JFK at the time and they did the training from midnight until 0800 because it was the only time an airplane was available to do door and window exit drills. We were NOT amused.

LOVE this one! I have spent many an hour waiting in the deicing line. You do NOT want to siton the forward f/a jumpseat during deicing--you will get soaked as the doors do not completely close and seal until pressurized. We found that one out the hard way!

There seems to be a disconnect between the web site for booking and the downloadable timetable, which I just refreshed, for January 6.

On the web site, DL 528 is an ATL->TLH turn around leaving ATL 3:43p, back in ATL at 6:29, with a DC9-50.

Electronic timetable for the same day shows a B717 leaving ATL at 3:00p, returning by 6:02.

I tend to believe the Web site, but it seems that the actual schedules are very fluid at the moment ..
I love to fly, and it shows!

Knowing Delta, they have something planned as a surprise. Not to be revealed until shortly before the last flight. They enjoy acknowledge significant events in company history like loaning a 747-200 to their employees for a weekend, flying it from MSP to BFI and back, picking up the tab for all of the fuel and costs and then throwing an awesome reception with MUCH food and adult beverages for a couple of thousand people. I was so pleased to have been on the 'retirement" flight. On take-off out of BFI the captain hauled her up into the sky at an awesome angle and then did a "wing wave" to all of the Boeing employees watching on the ground. Then we did a series of figure eights over Mt. Ranier before turning her proud nose back to MSP for the last time. There was not a dry eye on the plane. AND we raised over $5,000 from the lucky employees, retirees and their families for Breast Cancer Research. DL is always a class act.

VERY tempted to fly MKE-DTW-LGA-MKE to get on the final D95 MKE-DTW leg. It would be $780 to fly MKE-DTW-MKE but flying MKE-DTW-LGA-MKE is $270.

This brought a tear to my eye and cemented my opinion that Delta is truly a class act and will continue to be my airline of choice!

I 'm probably priced out of the final MSP-ATL flight. Fares are very high since it's mostly full. I just can't afford it. It's disappointing that the last flight isn't an extra section but instead a substitution for an already well-booked MD-88. Most of those already booked probably won't care one bit that it's a special flight. Just very disappointing that this flight wasn't tailored to those that want pay a tribute to the DC-9.

This is one of the reasons I love DL so much. What other US airlines (majors) do things like this to honor tradition for those that care about it?

I would have been shocked if it wasn't done in this case. When you have such a historic aircraft that meant so much to an airline, it's basically a guarantee that something special will be done.

And frankly, this one could have been handled differently. It's a fairly late schedule change and a substitution for an already well-booked flight. There's limited opportunities for an enthusiast to get on the final scheduled flight.

Yeah, a one-way ticket on that flight is coming in at $409 when other segments that day are less than half of that.

The triangle routing for me in and out of BNA has now doubled to more than $1,000. Sorry DL, that ain't happening.

Cheers to those who are able to make it!

When doing multi city the fare was outrageous. Broke it up half way into one ways and the first segment dropped $222 and gave me B and A fare classes for some unknown reason.   Played around for over an hour trying to fly out of different cities to possibly lower the fares. Since it's right after the holidays and the weekend when people are travelling back home the fares sting.

I was hoping they would have done it in the style of the final revenue L-1011 flight. Apparently this is not the case? Or is this subject to change still?

Yeah, I noticed they opened some of the lower fare buckets today. The $219 price was in the U bucket. They are now down to 1 L class seat left for sale. First class is now down to only 5 seats. Upgrade chances are looking bad.

They should push back the retirement date. We're going to run out of things to talk about around here when they are gone.

Justin (dazed767), Are you booked on the last confirmed DC-9 flight, or just one of the last DC-9 flights?
