Garuda Selects "Big Twin's For The Win"

It was rumored months ago that Garuda would select either the A380 or 748 for their next large A/C order and Hajj operations. Other's suspected that these could be possible Amedeo A380 placements?

It appears that has changed...

That's sad, the A380 will look stunning in the GA livery. Than again, so will the A350/787/777X

To me it seems that they'll be going with the 777X.

Makes sense. They need grow their network. Both 748 and 380 would be considerable overkill for most, if not all, of their routes.

Given the newness of the 77W fleet, and the fact that they've indicated they want larger craft, the only real option left for VLA is the 779. But given GA's statement that the order will be in "quite substantial" numbers, I could also see them with an A35J and A359 fleet to open other routes to Europe. The 78J would be a good A330 replacement too.

So, while I believe the 779 will win the initial order, there will be follow on orders too for smaller craft.

This announcement could become very telling in the VLA market... If anyone needed a VLA for Hajj Opns it was this airline... The fact that they don't think that they can make it work is telling... It will be interesting to see if their are any significant top-off orders going forward (aside for Emirates).

And before the A380 Mafia chimes in... We are taking all 4 engine A/C.

I think a 788 order would be good enough for GA for now, in order for them to build up their network. Could a 788 make it non-stop to Europe? That could open up new gateways there. I just hope they're not going to go after the Kangaroo route, as this will destroy them. Indonesia itself has tons of potential. It is a huge country with over 270m people. Having said that, I think the economic future of the country really hangs on the presidential elections in June (and potential run off in September), so let's wait and see.

Can't imagine they'd order the -8 when they could order the -9 (and -10 for that matter as an eventual A333 replacement).

If Boeing and GE are sharp with their numbers, I think they could take it all.

It's way too soon for the A330 replacement. Garuda has another 15 A330s on order and only the first 6 A330-300 jets are really old (MSN 138, 140, 144, 148, 153 and 165).

Their final 15 A330-300s are due for delivery between 2014 and 2018.

I would be inclined to expect them to be basing their RFP not just on current needs but also future replacement plans for their exiting models since it is unlikely that Boeing and Airbus will have replacements for the 787 and A350 families when those new 777s and A330s come up for replacement.

13.5-hrs westbound from CGK should get them well into Europe. A 788 is good for ~31t and a 789 for ~36t for the afore mentioned sector time
