UA And Azul!

Wed Mar 26, 2014 2:16 pm

Perhaps this was discussed, i did check the forum, but I didn't see anything about this.

Is United forming a codeshare agreement with Azul? I read that on one of my news alerts this morning. I seems it would start early April. If so I would be one happy flier! I love Azul.

I find Azul the best of the 3/4 big airlines in Brazil. If they can fill the connection from GRU to GIG and also take UA fliers to the major cities, it is a far better flying experience than TAM or GOL. I haven't flown Avianca brazil yet, rumors are that they are indeed better than TAM. Even better would be an Azul flight from GIG to GRU to get one of the 4 UA flights to IAD, EWR, ORD and even IAH. Although nothing would beat an EWR/GIG non-stop.

If there was an earn and redeem codeshare between United and Azul, what would that mean for Avianca Brazil.

Also since UA is stopping the GRU/GIG tag, have they arranged for a local carrier to fill that tag? It does seem like Azul with their E-Jets may be the right size vs an Airbus.

Avianca Brasil is expected to join StarAlliance sometime in the future, would imagine SA)">UA would partner with them?

Avianca [Holdings SA] appears to be taking its time with operational integration and has not issued any news relating to its O6 affiliate in Brazil. The long term expectations remain firmly in growth mode for AV's presence in Brazil, but no clue when they expect to finally execute the O6 acquisition. Presumably, Synergy Group would exchange its ownership in O6, in exchange for shares in AV Holdings. This would require AV board authorization and a "special committee" to ensure its public minority shareholders are protected.

Azul appears to be taking a "independent" approach, and is even planning for an eventual IPO on the Bovespa and NYSE. Who knows whether they want to partner with SA)">UA and StarAlliance. Neeleman founded Azul as "world class service LCC" in Brazil, similar to his experience at jetBlue and may not want to associate with a global carrier like SA)">UA until Azul reaches a larger scale. Surely, AV would be displeased if SA)">UA chose Azul over O6.

This is great! I think there's room for UA to partner with both Azul and Avianca Brasil. It's a smart move for UA with Delta partnering with GOL and AA partnering with TAM ahead of TAM joining oneworld.

Yes, I did go to the United website to find out more. Azul is a world class airline IMHO (LCC or not) the seats, the service and overall atmosphere is terrific. I even think they would have good shot at becoming a global player with wide bodies.

My most serious need are connections from United and Star Alliance arrivals into GRU or GIG. If I were to be in Business class on UA from EWR to GRU, then connected to Azul to GIG or even as far as FOR, I would be happy. Right now to transition from international Business or First, then onto coach on TAM is a shocker. At least the other way around if you landed in the USA from Business on any airline and into an F seat on a USA domestic 737/757 (for example) it would be far less of a shock than being put in regular coach on UA or other.

also, United has allowed their Brazil options to sink vs competition, if they only have one flight to GIG and it's always FULL and expensive, and they get rid of the tag, it's tantamount to throwing in the towel on Rio de Janeiro.

As for the IAH to GIG flight, would they ever move to a 747 now that the 747's are being spread out a bit more? Or, are they adding a second flight?
