Aero California

Sat Nov 04, 2000 3:54 pm

Hey everyone. I had a quick question. I'm probably going to be going to Los Cabos for Winter Break (Dec. 17th) and we will most likely be taking Aero California unless one of the other carriers (Alaska, Aeromexico or Mexicana) have a better deal as a vactation package in total. So has anyone flown Aero California before? I'd be flying a DC-9-30, I believe the first time ever on this aircraft type. So has anyone taken them to Tijuana, Los Cabos, Hermosillo, Torreon, Manzanillo, La Paz etc.? Any info about them ie: flight service, on time, quality of their planes would be helpfull. Thanks a ton.

WAAAY back I flew Aeromexico from Tucson to La Paz and we parked next to an Aero California jet. I heard from someone that they were known for purposely way-overbooking their flights. Of course this was a rumor and it was WAAY back in the spring of 1992.

Sorry I couldn't be of any useful help.

AeroCalifornia has been quite succesfull over the last many years, growing steadily and quietly in the shadow of AeroMexico and Mexicana. Many carriers have come and gone in Mexico during this period, however thanks to the strong financial backing of its owner JR has been moving up. All aircraft operated by JR are older used DC-9's. Service is nothing spectacular, just simple transportation from point A to point B. Yes many of its flights can be oversold to Baja, especially during the weekends.

Usually AeroCalifornia is the cheapest airline to Baja California from Alta California. However, Mexicana also has pretty good deals to Cabo San Lucas during the low seasons. In 1997 I flew Mexicana from L.A. to Cabo on an A320 and returned on a 727-200.

I have flow AeroCalifornia twice. The first time when I was a little kid back in 1988. The last time was this past summer on the Guadalajara-Mexico city route. AeroCalifornia is not well known for having a very good reputation with being on-time.

The average age of their planes is 30 years, so the planes look somewhat worn out inside and out. But nothing that I haven't seen on any of the American air carriers. All the planes have a first class section.
I found it pleasant flying AeroCalifornia on my last trip. For the short 55 minute trip from GDL to MEX I was served breakfast which consisted of a Mexican ham sandwich, fruit cocktail and an assortment of various Mexican fruit juices: Orange, apple, mango, etc, etc, which I found was incredable because we Americans are not used to such luxuries as FOOD on short distance hops. Only a bag of peanuts and a cup of coke. The flight service was regular. It seems like AeroCalifornia's flight attendants are all young 19-25 year old girls from Baja.

I second Apollo's comments, not a good on time reputation, out of the 3 roundtrips I've taken with them (last one about a month ago) at least 1 leg each trip has been late.
Servicewise, the food is tasty and there's usually a meal choice, the F/A's are nice and they range from pretty to VERY pretty, the best I've seen actually
