Gol Applies For VCP-SDQ-MIA

Thu Mar 27, 2014 6:35 am

Interesting move by Gol. It has applied with Brazil's ANAC to begin service between Viracopos and Miami via Santo Domingo three times a week.

Gol currently flies two U.S. routes: MIA-SDQ-GIG and MCO-SDQ-GRU, with flights at SDQ acting as a scissor hub.

I flew AD from VCP-GIG last year. VCP is a very interesting setup, but there are plans for a much larger terminal there and I think the area around VCP, Campinas, is heavily involved in technology industry. Azul has a large operation and have dedicated, comfortable bus links to Sao Paulo there. I'm unsure what kind of infrastructure G3 has at VCP but I don't know of anything short of a dedicated high speed rail line that would woo high value business travelers to the USA way out to Campinas!

GOL wants to fly to Nigeria with a 737 from Brazil, from Recife to Lagos. 2,900 miles.

The market on the Brazilian side for LOS is in GIG perhaps SSA but not in REC.
Routing VCP-MIA via SDQ might have to do with a crew change in SDQ.
I'm not on CM's payroll.

Recife to Lagos is 170 miles farther than Boston to Los Angeles. It seems quite a normal route for a current generation 737.
