World Airways Shuts Down

Thu Mar 27, 2014 5:12 pm

After 66 years, World Airways will close the doors as of 5 pm today. I am sure that there will be more details, but I wanted to wish ll of my friends and former colleagues the best of luck. It has been painful to watch a once proud airline be raped and pillaged of it's pride and standing in the industry.

Yup, suppose the BK court hearing regarding auctioning off the company on Tuesday did not go well. Suspect there was not enough interest, or if so no bidder was willing to cover the minimum $35million required to repay Cerberus.

Here is the news story

BREAKING: World Airways Immediately Shutting Down

CEO says company will cease operations immediately, and North American Airlines will see "significant reductions".

As a resident of Peachtree City where the airline is HDQ, I just hate to see this for the employees with its long and rich history. My best to all of those at World!

Although it's not a total surprise for me since they were shrinking these last few years, it's still sad to see an airline with such a history to simply vanish.

how sad is this! This was the oldest charter airline in existence. I worked for World Airways as a gate agent back in the early 80's at the West Imperial Terminal LAX when we operated a bunch of scheduled service.

I am kind of shocked that they would close so quickly... But I am not shocked that they are closing.

I wish the best to the employees and crews of World Airways, and hope they have luck in their future ventures.

Sad news indeed. I was really rooting for their post-deregulation scheduled service. Such an interesting period in the USA with new airlines popping up every month it seemed and the former "Supplementals" all taking a stab at scheduled ops. World had a nice little network for awhile stretching from HNL to FRA and points in between. Didn't have the resources to withstand the bloodbath and build a sustainable route system.

Best wishes to the employees of this storied airline.

Oh dear.... been through this three times in my career already (yeah..... I know...). It is not a nice feeling, and typically you'll have been left without pay for the month (or part of the month) in a sudden shutdown like this.

My sympathies to all involved: your aircraft were a very familiar sight here in Ireland, and I hope you all find work very soon.

Good luck to you and all of the soon former WO employees. I remember you were with us when TZ shut down. I met some nice folks at WO and hope they get back on their feet soon.

During the Vietnam conflict world was a major payer in getting the US troops back and forth . When the flights would arrive in Vietnam there was always a large gathering to get a look at the flight attendants

WOW... This sucks!!! Flew military charter with them to Europe years ago, and they were always wonderful people and service was great! R.I.P. World, you covered the world wonderfully!!! That old DC-10 I was on, was a workhorse! Always loved seeing them landing wherever I was!

They really loved supporting the troops and taking care of them to and from!

The service was great, better than the legacy airlines. Hot meals, tons of snacks for movies, and all the soda/juice that you could handle.

Hi, my experience (and the friends that have messaged me frantically about this) was: incredibly courteous staff (all of them), good food (for airline food...lol), and drinks, and always making sure that they vocalized how much they appreciated our service! I don't ever remember one of them with out a smile on their faces!

Too bad. Only flew them once in August 1980. DC-10 HNL-LAX. Naturally red-eye, and was the second most miserable flight for me, but only due to dealing with allergies from carnation leis we were bringing back from HI!
Really enjoyed the trip overall and was my second DC-10 trip. (First was CO -10 over.)
Biggest disappointment: As a schedule collector, I had grabbed a few odd-for-me-at-the-time schedules (China Air Lines especially), and naturally left them in the seatback pocket upon arrival. Loved using the stairs at LAX WIT though. Seemed a lot of plane for terminal of that size lol.
Good luck to WO folks.

I flew with them in scheduled service on a DC-10 from Baltimore to Newark. It was the same DC-10 that later crashed in Boston. The only gripe I had with them was the 3-4-3 seating.

It would be great if a properly documented book about the rich and long history of World could be published.

Ed Daly didn't found WO, but he led the company from July 1950 when he acquired it until his death in January 1984.

Sad to know. In the summer of 1966 during the airline strike, my grandma and I flew LAX-JFK on a 707-320C. I think we boarded at the Imperial Terminal at LAX and don't recall where we deplaned at JFK, only that it was a fairly short transfer to the NY B107 helicopter to EWR.

Rode World in July 2001 on N271WA from Rhein Main to Baltimore after 6 weeks in Kuwait and rode them again in
in February 2002 from Rhein Main to Baltimore to Charleston on a DC-10 after my TDY to Sigonella and Rhein Main.
Great Company. May have rode aboard a 707 Military charter as a child in 1969 from Travis to Kadena.

Wow! World Airways gone. I can remember their beautiful red, white and gold DC-10's in the late 70's. Very classy looking airplane.
I won't ever forget the picture of the World 727 after departure from South Vietnam, overloaded with people. The photo is from underneath the airplane, the nose gear is inoperative, if I remember correctly, the cargo door is open, and you can see a foot protruding from a wheel well. I believe it was piloted by Captain Daly, who might have been president at the time?
If anyone has details of this incredible flight that they would like to share it would be appreciated.
To all World employees: your company won't be forgetten in the minds of those who were around when it was a class act.

I can see why they pulled the plug.

Looking at court documents this months planned auction for the airline had zero interested parties, so the bid deadline was extended to April 28th.

Then add in the fact that WO continued to generate monthly losses of between $2.5-7mil since reentering BK as liabilities grew it became a case of either continue pumping money in, or forget it. Obviously Cerberus Capital who provided the initial DIP financing got tired and did not want to further add to the $100mil negative net equity at WO.

North American on the other hand managed to eek out small profits ($500k-2.0mil) since entering BK and sits in positive equity territory.

Now my question is how was the company allowed to exit BK in February 2013 to only reenter it in November?

At the end, I think this is yet another case of a company being too reliant for too long on primary revenue stream and not looking to diversify and adapt to future. Like Evergreen living off Uncle Sam is great while it lasted, but without coherent alternate revenue sources and business plan one is left out in the cold when the marry go-around stops.

As a railroad guy I come to these forums to learn rather than speak. This topic caught my attention.

I have had the honor to meet 8 returning flights from Iraq and Afghanistan at Pope and
McChord AFB. I have two children that have served in both places. There is no sight I have ever
seen as wonderful as those D10s touching down safely after a year of waiting. The crews took great
Care of the troops and would come out on the stairway to join the applause as the soldiers disembarked.
I will always remember those planes and thank the crews that flew them.

I'm sad, though not at all surprised, at this news. I flew WO in 2000, JFK-IST/BCN-JFK, chartered by Princess Cruises to meet a Mediterranean cruise. It was an MD-11 outbound and the last DC-10 built home. The high-density charter configuration (410 passengers on an MD-11!) was less than spacious, but otherwise the flights were fine. (Anyone who complains about 10-abreast on a 777 but has never done a long flight on a 10-abreast DC-10/MD-11 needs to STFU.   ) That JFK-IST flight was also my one MD-11 flight (though I once got to play around on some Swissair MD-11s at on the ground at JFK). And it was cool to fly the last DC-10 built (l/n 446), though it was in pretty bad shape for a then-12-year-old airplane.

It is unfortunate to see their demise although it has been obvious it was coming for a while. I flew on N271WA, N277WA and, N803DE several times during my time in the ARMY to Kuwait and Kyrgystan. They always had very professional service and amazing employees. When I was in Afghanistan their MD-11F, and 747 would come in on a regular basis and always perform and awesome takeoff, was a blast to watch. We went tech at ATL on our way to DFW with a broken air turbine started on the number one engine and they had it replaced in less then an hour. We also went tech from SVN- Leipzig with our number 2 engine thrust reverser stuck open, It took about 2 days to fix but they still took very good care of us. I will miss World and the MD-11, it was always a pleasure to fly on. R.I.P. World. Best of luck to the excellent flight crews and cabin staff. They set the standard.

At one point in the not-too-distant past, they were diversified. They were providing lift to DHL, had an ACMI agreement with an African carrier and were flying between Europe and AMEA for a freight forwarder, among other things. Did they let all these deals lapse to focus on government contracts, or did they stop being competitive at that time and let others take their contracts away?

My thoughts go out to my friends and former co-workers on losing the livelihood. I was always proud to work there and learned a lot about airline ops in less developed parts of the world. We may have bent the occasional rule here and there, but it was in the name of getting the troops home. The few times I was able to go ride a plane was always an eye opening experience and the crews always did a good job taking care of the passengers, especially the troops.

Quoting madviking (Reply 40):

No, Hollis has been gone since about 2005 or so. And that, in my mind, was when the slow decline started.

My understanding is they lost some contracts due to a combination lack of demand for supplemental lift and competitive pricing.

MD-11s havent been converted in years. And the first airlines have begun to retire their MD11Fs, like LH or Eva. With a high chance the WO planes will be scrapped.

Scrapped or converted into freighters.

Seeing the way things go for the MD-11 in general, I believe they'll be scrapped as were other MD-11 operated by World and later parked when they downsized. Only one of their two MD-11ER was converted BEFORE the cargo slump and it is now with AvCargo. And since there are other MD-11F around, I think 271 & 272 have reached the end of their lives.
