Continental Minihubs In Panama City And Quito

Sun Nov 05, 2000 2:14 am

I've noticed that Continental have numerous flights in and out of Panama City, Panama and Quito, Ecuador. At PTY, they have flights to Newark, Houston, Quito, Guayaquil, and many others via codeshare. At Quito, they have flights to Panam City, Quayaquil, Houston, and Bogota. I think that Continental should take over some of the routes that COPA operates from Panama, like Los Angeles, and initiate service to other markets from there, like Orlando, New Orleans, Cali, Cuzco, and others. I hope that one day Continental will take over COPA so that they'll be able to have a hub in Latin America.

Copa's Panama City hub serves 30 cities in 20 countries. Continental of course has a 49% ownership stake in Copa, with some of CO's new Next Generation 737s being delivered directly to Copa from Boeing to upgrade Copa's fleet. Take a look at the extent of their PTY hub operations.

Service from PTY:

Columbia:
Barranquila (BAQ)
Bogota (BOG)
Cali (CLO)
Cartagena (CTG)
Medellin (MDE)

Venezuela:
Caracas (CCS)

Ecuador:
Guayaquil (GYE)
Quito (UIO)

Peru:
Lima (LIM)

Chile:
Santaigo (SCL)

Brasil:
Sao Paulo (GRU)

Argentina:
Buenos Aires (EZE)

Costa Rica:
San Jose (SJO)

Nicaragua:
Managua (MGA)

El Salvador:
San Salvador (SAL)

Honduras:
San Pedro Sula (SAP)

Guatemala:
Guatemala City (GUA)

Mexico:
Cancun (CUN)
Mexico City (MEX)

United States:
Houston (IAH)
Miami (MIA)
Newark (EWR)
Orlando (MCO)
Los Angeles (LAX)

Cuba:
La Habana (HAV)

Puerto Rico:
San Juan (SJU)

Jamaica:
Kingston (KIN)
Montego Bay (MJB)

Haiti:
Port Au Prince (PAP)

Dominican Republic:
Santo Domingo (SDQ)

Looks like a fairly well developed hub and spoke system. I don't know if CO will ever have more than 49% control of Copa due to Panamanian law. However, you can see CO's commitment to Latin America here. CO is very quickly becoming the major US airline in Latin America. It is fairly obvious why Delta, who is making its own push in Latin America, sees CO as a perfect fit for a merger. I view the PTY hub as the fourth hub for CO in the Western Hemisphere after EWR, IAH, and CLE.

UIO is hardly a minihub for CO. The flights from UIO to BOG and Panama City are stops on the way to either EWR or IAH. They have one nonstop each day I believe to IAH whilst their other two flights to the USA are one-stop.
