SIA openly accepted responsibility for the crash of SQ006 and has offered compensation of US $ 400,000 for each victim to the next of kin.
I wonder if this offer would include a waiver to sue the airline for any punitive damages. My legal instincts tell me that it probably would. If multiple lawsuits were brought in several different countries, the airline would probably be drawn into a never ending legal battle that would damage its reputation forever. Still, I suspect that some victim's families will sue SIA for far greater amounts, especially if lawsuits are brought in the US.
So, although I'm cynical about this proclamation and SIA's motives, I still have to hand it to SIA for taking responsibility for this accident and moving so quickly in offering compensation. If nothing else, it sets them apart from the hoi polloi in air travel even more.
