Sands/Venetian A345 Arrives In LAS

Sun Jul 06, 2014 8:20 pm

The well kept secret is out of the bag today. Sheldon's A340-500 (ex-SQ) is at LAS for internal corporate viewing today. To us 74L fans, the news could be bittersweet, but supposedly, the SP's are not going anywhere. There will be some fleet aligning in the coming months. One of the SP's maybe moved from LAS to a Asia base as the 345 will be LAS based. The 763 maybe getting donated as a Head of State aircraft for a foreign country.

I saw one of Sand's 747SP in Fort Lauderdale last month and I figured it was in town for the NBA playoffs. Is Sand's fleet used to fly high level clients and gamblers to different gaming resorts, luxury vacations and sports events?

So is this the replacement for the L1011 that was damaged in the flooding at Don Mueang/Muang Airport in Bangkok?

Seems like it, and well done to those here that predicted Sands will get an ex-SQ or TG A345. Hope she has a long career flying the uber-rich and famous about.

FWIW I played a round at the RTAF Kantarat Golf Course, between the DMK runways, on the weekend and the Sands L-1011 is still there with 2 Thai Sky L-1011s (I only counted 3 L-1011s in total). Also, either just one or both of the Thai Sky L-1011s are for sale for 9,000,000 THB as well as the Orient Thai MD80 (6,000,000 THB) and the Orient Thai 747-200 (14,000,000 THB).

I still find it amazing that they have the money to buy and fly such large aircraft. But hey, it's their money. And they obviously find it worthwhile; they do not appear to be cutting back at all.

Slightly off topic, but how does Sands handle crew training and maintenance for the 747SP's? It would seem to me that there wouldn't be many remaining suppliers for these kind of services.

I knew one of the mechanics working on the 763 before I left LV and moved back to Arizona, and according to him Adelson was shopping for a replacement for the 763 because he was tired of having to make tech stops (usually in Anchorage) to get back and forth to Asia. The 763 was his own personal aircraft and is/was not used to fly VIP's (high rollers).

He and his wife are also very friendly with the Israeli government, so I would think that if the 763 is "being donated" for a Head of State aircraft, it would seem likely it would be moving to TLV.

Does anyone know exactly how many frames are in the Adelson Air Force?

Besides the 74L's and the 763, I think there are several 737's and a host of smaller corporate jets. I think it's a rather sizeable fleet.

I'm actually kind of surprised European governments haven't snapped up the ex-airline A345's for conversion to government VIP aircraft. After all, an A345 equipped in executive configuration actually has more range than the VC-25A used by the President of the USA on a single load of fuel.

But how many other heads of state need that kind of range? And the VC-25 can be refueled in the air, and it is 2 generations old, and supposedly due to be replaced soon.

Not only is the company ridiculously profitable, but Sheldon Adelson and his family control a majority of the shares, so they get to spend that profit more or less however they want to, unlike say Caesar Entertainment or MGM Resorts which have a more... modest fleet.

The B74S are VP-BLQ and VQ-BMS. For the other aircraft, look up FAA registration for Las Vegas Sands, Sands Aviation and Interface Operations.

Actually, sadly there is no such place any more, it was demolished to make way for the Venetian, the only thing left with the Sands name/ logo is the convention center.

Anyways, it's good to see them taking on the 345, combine that with the 74L and we have two of my favorite niche aircraft types being saved from the cutter.

Crown and The Star casinos here in Australia need to lift their game! They are only flying Gulfstream and Global Express' sized planes... oh to have an Aussie registered A340-500!
There was a media report a few months ago here (sorry, I can't remember where) that talked about how quickly the casinos were able to pay off their bizjets due to the profits they were able to pull in from the big gamblers of Asia who flew in the jets.
How the other half - or should that be 0.00000001% - live!

Sheldon Adelson is one of the biggest bankrollers of the U.S. Republican Party. All the presidential hopefuls make pilgrimages to see him, kneeling at his feet, to beg for money. He loves playing the kingmaker but he hasn't had much luck. He's been throwing his money away the last two elections but you know someone has money to burn if they're flying around in a 747SP or A345.

I was surprised to see a white A345 next to 747SP in front of the Las Vegas Sands hanger when I land last night, and I really did a double take, was my eyes playing tricks on me?

Congrats on Sands to get a more modern a/c. Anyone knows when and where will she get her paint? Any difference in color scheme? I'd think they'll probably paint her in the Sands scheme.

Congrads Sands, it nice to finaly an US own A340. It good to see A340s, moving VIPs around, instead of hauling cargo like retired A300s and DC-8s did.

The Marina Bay Sands in Singapore also.

The corporation flies in people who gamble BIG. Six and seven figure US dollar amounts. It really doesn't matter that they loose large amounts. Gamblers on that level generate a synergy that causes other smaller gamblers to increase their traffic by 50 to 250 %.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Las_Vegas_Sands_Corp#Aircraft

They could have established their own in-house training programs and maintenance programs, or they could use speciality contractors. Companies like FlightSafety can design and supervise a crew and maintenance training and certification program for any aircraft. All it takes is the right amount of cubic dollars. The entire fleet can be operated for likely less than 50 million per year - which is less than 0.04% of the company gross income.

As far as spare parts the SPs are getting to the point where it is likely cost effective to purchase airframes and use them for parts sources.

Actually they would fly at .84 to Fairbanks, land straight in during the wee hours take on a fuel load of cold fuel and then takeoff fly at .81 for the Fairbanks to Hong Kong leg. Very quick turn times.

Following reply 34, I found the following, (excluding Iran).

ZS-SPC Displayed
YK-AHA
YK-AHB
F-GTOM Last noted 2009
S2-JSF
N747NA Universal Studios
N147UA FAA Atlantic City
N135SW Last noted 2000
N136SW Last noted 2001
C-FPAW PWC Test Bed
VP-BLK Last noted 2007
P4-FSH Last noted 2009

YI-AOX Last noted 2012
C-GTFF PWC Test Bed
HZ-AIF
N4522V Last noted 2011
YI-ALM Last noted 2009

This list doubtless seems impressive.

However, F-GTOM, N135SW, N136SW have prob been scrapped, N747A, N147UA, YI-AOX, N4522V and YI-ALM have
been parked for many years and YK-AHA and YK-AHB are sanctioned..

IMO B747SP spares obtained by cannabilisation will be a problem.

Adelson is the 9th richest person in the world. He can buy anything he wants.

He could BUY AIRBUS ($37B).

Suddenly a used A345 seems perfectly rational, especially since as a Sands plane, he can write it off! (Of course!)

Found a recent picture of F-GTOM.

www.airplane-pictures.net/photo/423171/f-gtom-corsair-boeing-747sp

It is engineless but otherwise complete.

However, it has been sat in a field for years.

Little scope for parts to be transferred to an operational B747SP.

I think it was obvious, but when I lived in SoCal we just called it "Vegas".

Completely off-topic, but the various names I have heard for Las Vegas, Nevada:

-Lost Wages (my favorite!)
-Sin City
-Vegas

I have never heard anyone call it LV before...

763 N804MS left Oslo, Norway, yesterday, on a course that indicated West Coast. Did it arrive LAS last night? Anyone know who it was carrying?
