Have You Recently Travelled On An African Airline?

Tue Nov 07, 2000 3:30 am

Did anybody recently fly on any of the following major African airlines, like Egyptair, Royal Air Maroc, Tunis Air, Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, SAA, or Air Afrique, to an African destination ? How did you find the onboard service, cabin crew, flight etc.? Please share your experiences with us !

In 1992 I left Jan Smuts Jo'burg international for a flight to Victoria falls. The aircraft was a B737-200adv (named "Letaba" after the river). I don't remeber if the service was good or not but I do remember the captain giving us a sightseeing tour! On approach to the falls he swerved steeply to the right. I looked across the row of seats straight down to the falls a few hundred metres below. A marvellous sight!
I was born and lived in South Africa for 14 years but that was the only occasion I ever had to fly this great airline!
I also had the occasion to fly Tunisair but that was a different story. For a 2h30 hour flight on an A300B4 we weren't even served a drink! Above all half the paint had peeled off the tail! They should take some maintenance lessons from SAA.

Cheers ,

Yes I have. I flew Egypt Air when I went to Egypt back in February. I did like the service on board and I found the crews to be friendly. I also liked the interiors on Egypt Air, they seemed to be beautiful and all cleaned. On some of their aircrafts they show you a moving map display with some flight information. During that trip, I flew on the B747-300, A300 and A320/A321. That's the airline I took my first A320 flight, the aircraft was still in the old scheme. The 747, A300 and A321 were in the new colours. I like Egypt Air, I would definitely rate them as being in the top 5 African airlines.
The other African airline I flew is South African Airways, I flew with them three years ago and five years ago when I went to South Africa and I really liked them, their inflight service was very good, they also show flight information on the screen during the flight. With South African, I flew on the A300 and the B747-200/300/400. I took my first 747-400 flight with South African, my longest flight ever, from Miami to Cape Town nonstop! I've flown quite a few long hauls with South African, between London, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Miami. On a two hour flight from Jo'burg to Cape Town, I got a hot meal(it was an A300). South African is the best airline in Africa.
