AA & DL To Fly 747-400s

Tue Nov 07, 2000 5:20 am

Why do other airlines like United & Northwest fly the 747-400 and not American or Delta for both Domestic & International services.....??

Do you think both UAL & NWA may retire their 747s....?

Details please...

i can tell we have another 747 lover here among us...hehe  Just my two cents, but Delta and American (and even CO) are happy with their 777s, and don't see a need for 744s right now...but it would be nice if they did order a few..i'd like to see a 744 in shiny metal scheme of AA....

The airlines in question just do not feel they need that sort of capacity on their flights, they prefer their 777's and 767-400's respectively. The 747 certainly isn't for every airline or every route, it's a nice plane but it's not a cure-all on any route.

And the topic name? NOT COOL. Try looking at the rules (in this box) some time eh?

DL, AA, and CO don't need the capacity of the 747. Remember, UAL and NWA have many more transpacific flights than DL, AA, or CO, and all of UAL/NWA's 747s are used on transpacific flights. AA, CO, and DL concentrate more on the transatlantic market, where a 777 or 767 is much more profitable. Although, I do miss those days of transatlantic PanAm/TWA 747's.

Both UA and NW operate 742 and 744 across the atlantic, but the majority of 747s cross the pacific. Not to be picky Cba...

I was fooled by the topic too.
If any airline orders them out of the three, I have a gut feeling it will be American. American is going to start SJC-TPE in april of 2001 and I have a feeling that it will be the first of an expansion over the pacific with CX,China eastern,Asiana,JAL,and EVA Airways. I expect service to SEL,BKK,Beijing,HKG,Changi, and several others to come. I truly think that American will eventually buy them

I don't think UAL or NW will retire their 744s, they are very happy with them.

I could see AA, DL, or CO ordering a FEW, but not much, because they don't need the capacity, and as stated before, love their 767s and 777s.

AA has no plans to buy a 747-400 or A3XX. They believe the passenger fells like they're getting better service in smaller planes.

United does not fly 747-200s across the atlantic. In fact, they only have a few left on use to Hawaii which will be retired early December.

To put things into perspective:

UA has less than 5 or so 747-200s and 44 747-400s.

NW has 20+ 747-200s (passenger, more for Cargo) and 14 747-400s.

Bassim, I don't care who you think you are, but if you want to remain part of this board you will comply with the rules. Posting misleading and false topic headings is an express lane out of here. Shape up.

If AA, DL, or CO needs a plane with more capacity than their current 777's, they'll order the 777-300ER before they consider a 747.

Cba &RWally have it right..AA is not going to order a 747 again. Very doubtful if DL or CO ever have any again either. The 777 series will meet any perceived trans-Pacific or trans-Atlantic need for many years to come. All of them remember the costs associated with a fleet of them and how it damn near ruined them in the 70's. Not making that mistake again. Also forget the A-3XX also..isn't going to happen.

Also, Please make your topic a bit more truthful. I looked at it for the fun of it because I knew it wasn't true!

Also, bear in mind, thought no longer legally bound by the exclusivity contracts with Boeing, bet your last dollar those 3 airlines will be buying Boeing over the next 10-15 years. It was a corporate decision made in 3 different board rooms, for different reasons, but still that's the program.
