Swiss Leases In 4x E190 To Replace Avro's

Fri Aug 29, 2014 11:22 am

LX has agreed with Helvetic ( 2L ) to lease in 4x Embraer 190 as per December 2014 to start replacing the aging Avro RJ100's.

It has been known for a while that the Avro's are getting older and more troublesome to the airline. With the scope on the delays with the C-series Swiss has agreed to tighten up de relationship with 2L to lease 4 E-190's to replace 4 of the older AR1's. After the arrival of the first C-series the 4 E-jets will remain being leased from 2L and the 4 Fokker 100's currently on lease will be released back to 2L. Cabin Crew will be Helvetic, but the front office will be manned with LX crew.

My question would be, where will those Jungle Jets come from? New? 2nd Hand? etc.

And i booked a trip at the end of december to get the Avro RJ100 which i haven´t flown on till now...

Would be interesting to know which Embraer it should be? Where do they come from?
Any ideas?

Don't worry too much about that. It's only 4 out of a total fleet of 20 AR1's which will be phased out this year.

I have no clue till now where the Embraers will come from. Are there frames available at the 2nd hand market?

So then they will have a fleet of E-Jets, CSeries, Airbus and (then) Boeing? It's a lot coming from an airlines that flew volt Airbus metal for so long (taking in consideration that the Avro belong to Swiss European Airlines). Isn't it a waist of monu to operate so many different type?

Maybe the E-Jet will definitely replace the F100 of 2L!

The E-Jets will only feature shortly as a stop-gap measure because the CSeries is so heavily delayed. Several Avros are up for their next C-Check and Swiss is not going to pay for those anymore, so they need a replacement ahead of the actual CSeries deliveries.

The E-Jets will more than likely eventually replace the F100s at Helvetic; but they won't fly for Swiss permanently. So, in the long run, Swiss will only add one net type to the fleet, the 777. The E-Jets are not a fleet addition in that sense anyway, as they are on a full service lease with only the crew coming from Swiss.

Isn't B6 looking to get rid of some E190s? I seem to remember hearing that around here more than once or twice.

i wonder why they could´t make a deal with austria´s Niki (HG). they want to get rid of their seven E190 a.s.a.p., even if it´s just a short term lease.

LX will not deal with airlines that have a ownership link with Etihad.

I hope that my trip to VCE in March remains an Avro. I'll sure miss them. As I always say, they are the closest thing to a 707 today.

Sad to see more Avro RJs disappearing from the skies of Europe.

My favourite aircraft.

Strange that they will replace the planes (ARJ) that were supposed to replace the Fokker 100s (why did the original Swissair get rid of them so quickly in the 90s?) while the F100 still is in service (at Helvetic).

As 4 engines 3 longhaul is a pretty old phrase, 4 engines 4 short haul is meant to be displayed in a museum I guess.

Obvious and logical move of Swiss. Sad to see on my preferred planes (along with the Fokkers and MDs) dissappear....

Well they are beautiful birds, especially on the left side window seats where you have great living space due to the 5-abreast Swiss is using...

I noticed a direct correlation pattern between the avro being put on the VCE and VRN routes and a dismal state of our national economy. After 9/11 I flew on lots of avro flights both on LX and BA, when the aviation market was on life support. Then again during the financial crisis in 2008/9. And now again. If that is the case, you have no reason to fear.

Is there a long wait for new build EMB190's? How quickly can an order be delivered? It seems as if there are very large orders on their books.

There were some former nasair (from Saudi Arabia) around - could be a good source because the only A319 of Helvetic Airways has operated by nasair as well... But an interesting fact is, that Borajet of Turkey also get E190s from nasair - one has already seen in AMM in full colors.

Whilst can't be sure i'd expect them to be sourced within the LH Group either from Air Dolomiti or LH Cityline - Could even be those few ex Augsburg machines couldn't they ?

Air Dolomiti operates E195 and I'm quite sure CL has no spare E190 and if they had some wouldn't it be easier to lease them directly from CL? Cl has actually more E195 than E190.

IQ operated 5 E195 for CL and had 2 E190. One of them went to the aforementioned BoraJet and the other is stored according to planespotters.net.

I fly there yearly and only the this year was ZRH-VCE all Arvro. Previously in 2011 it was all A319/20s and in 2012 it was a mix. We got a F100 in there this year, too!

At the time Swissair said the operating costs of the F100 (or any other 100-seat aircraft) weren't compatible with Swissair's high cost structure and that the F100 was responsible for a large share of Swissair's losses on their European routes.

They thus agreed to transfer all the 100-seat flying to lower-cost regional partner Crossair which acquired the Avro RJs for that job.

I have to wonder if this is again linked to LCY's capacity and the C Series size. The current schedule would see Swiss occupy three quarters of all compatible stands, not leaving much room for other carriers who may need it. Leasing E-Jets until the stand expansion is completed avoids any potential problem.

I think so yes.

LX clearly stated that it looks for a plane that will initially replace the Avro RJ but further down the stage the A319 (and A320) too. Beside de CS100 and the CS300, the 180 seat CS500 (paper) it could fill everything between 100 and 150 seats for LX. So the right plane.

And please no, not another ERJ operator....it gets more boring and boring to fly....
