Alitalia To Shut Air One

Fri Aug 29, 2014 7:56 pm

Alitalia has decided that the Air One brand and separate operation will disapear starting in October.

Air One which Alitalia acquired in 2009 was marketed as an LCC hybrid "smart carrier” operating primarily from secondary bases.

As part of the wind down the carrier will cease to operate routes from Catania, Palermo and Venice effective Sept 30th, while Malpensa, Verona and Pisa flights will end October 30th.

Good move imo.
Not only was it confusing to the consumer when they end up on AP when they bought a ticket for AZ, it also created significant duplication in many behind the scenes departments running separate airlines.

Do they have 9 or 10 A320? I have different information here.

What will happen to the aircrafts? To Alitalia or back to lessor ?

I see this as good move.

It shows that is was foolish to try go up against people like Easyjet and Ryanair on random point to point routes. Clearly AZ did not have the cost base, or ability to attract enough profitable traffic to do so even under the Air One branding.

Let the new AZ focus developing its core strength at Rome and Milan Linate.

Was AP running on a deficit?

Pretty good idea for AZ. They need to downsize as much as they can.

They have Alitalia Express, no need to have another brand doing secondary routes.

Weren't some planes "Alitalia - operated by Air One" or the like?

... Even more confusing!

Never understood the point of AP. Not a big loss and it will save them money. A lot of AZ planes are old AP planes anyway...

AirOne was not that bad at the time they were still independant. I remember them being LH partners before they moved into the AZ network. I even used them a few times between CDG and TRN with their CRJ900s.
So far, the whole brand has been really confusing in Italy. They tried to focus on "migrant" routes during busy summer season however, I have the feeling they've lost their soul. AZ will now be able to concentrate on creating value for its shareholders and improve service on both domestic and international network.
I wonder what will happen to their slots at both LIN and FCO.

I personally think the role of AP was essentially a face-saver and a tool to return to and re-gain market share in secondary airports/destinations in Italy that AZ had managed to alienate during their waltzes of 180-degree strategy changes, allowing AZ to return without losing face. That need is no longer there today.

Well, Air One was not very different from the role of Vueling in Iberia and Transavia for Air France - KLM and both have a regional service as well, so actually when Air One was formed as low cost airline i though was a good idea.
My opinion is that the rebranding is included in the 49% acquisition of Etihad wich is tiding up things inside Alitalia.

They say they will take over the routes left by Air One and I hope so since some of them are within Italy and they are extremely important.

The economic reasons for shutting down Air One are quite understandable, nevertheless it will be missed at least by me. The prices on AP flights from Eastern Europe were nice (especially during sales).

Welcome to airliners.net

AP was a much better player when it was independent. I think this is going to kill certain things in Alitalia as well. It is amazing what Middle Eastern money can do. Interesting times ahead..

Alitalia stated that part of the routed will be take over by Alitalia in itself, my guess is that all the employers will be absorbed by Alitalia and they'll put in other routes which Alitalia is thinking to open, but not sure about it of course. If they are going to be fired, the unions won't stay quite, as usual in Italy....

Yes AP was good and looked like had opportunity to grow when it was independent and aligned with LH and Star airlines, but under AZ banner its operation shrink and it became confusing. It shifted many routes, open/close many domestic bases, and service mostly poor leisure/ethnic markets under AZ banner.

This also has to do with the airport strategy - not necessarily the airline.
VCE has recently bought a stake into VRN and they control TFS. My guess is they are streamlining operations across VCE VRN and TFS so that VCE is focused on international and high-yield operations, VRN focuses on tour operators and holiday destinations, and TFS focuses on LCCs, but this is my observation. I cant assure it is the case.

So do you not expect another airline, such as Vueling or easyJet, to step in and fill that empty slots? It was nice having some new destinations out of VRN other than hub routes.

You're absolutely right, I found this after original post:

Notice posted finally on the Air One website.

Important information about Air One flights from October the 1st

The Alitalia Group, in the pursuit of sustainability goals and as part of a process to streamline its medium-haul fleet during the next winter season, has decided to cease the services presently offered with Air One brand.

Consequently, beginning October the 1st, together with the closure of the summer season routes, most of the connections currently operated by Air One will be operated by Alitalia brand and aircraft.

All customers holding tickets for flights operated by Air One, with departure or return in October or in the following months, will be contacted soon by the Group’s Customer Center that will advice on new travel information and on rebook, change or refund terms and conditions.

Flights that Alitalia will operate from October to replace the Air One network are available and on sale on the www.alitalia.com website and in any travel agency.

Some clarity on future of Air One markets

From Turin:
Keep - Naples, Lamezia and Reggio Calabria
Cancel - Alghero, Bari, Catania, Palermo

sdexplorer00, I think the traffic is there but not at the right fares. Keep in mind that Ryanair pulled our of VRN altogether, which was basically a focus city for them, so I assume they did their homework. Verona is just over an hour from both BGY and VCE.. BGY in particular is one of Ryanair's largest hubs. As you might have heard, Barcelona has unfortunately been marketed as a "low-cost" destination lately, so fares are the #1 factor.

I find that mind-boggling.

CTA and PMO have always seemed busier and healthy LF and farewise than SUF or REG.

Not that I like Torino but I hate losing yet more flight options from CTA

Overall, it looks like smaller airports are gonna be shunned in the new Alitalia.
