British Airways Tail Design

Fri Nov 10, 2000 12:42 pm

Why is British Airways now changing its tail design to the Union Jack on all its planes, instead of keeping its new "world design"

Although I liked some of the World tails, some were crappy. The new scheme is the hottest! I don't think it's a good idea to have inconsistent paint schemes for an airline.

To make the point last year when BA had the world colors they made 40,000,000 pounds before taxes. In the first quarter of this year with the flag tail they have made 200,000,000 before tax. See the point?

I don't think that was the main reason Iainhol, more to do with BA getting a grip with reality, and executing tough decisions (future of domestic services etc. etc)

The change of livery was a good move though, although there will always be those who liked Utopia...

I liked the "world design"; however, I really like the union flag look on the tail. You can easily recognize BA and it gives it the look a world class airline should have.

Okay.... in 1997 British Airways revieled the "World Images" scheme. A few weeks after that Virgin Atlantic announced thier new paint livery, that would proudly include the union jack, Which made Virgin Atlantic, "Britians Flag Carrier". On june 6 1999 the annoucment was made that no more world images would be pianted Instead new delivers would sport the new union jack livery. The "new" union jack livery is really a world image. It was originally made just for the concorde. So all in all yes they are phasing out the world images. If any of you wanna argue go out to barnes and noble (US) or any other book store and buy this months issue of Airliners. It lists and shows all the world images. I hope i answeed your question.

Does anyone know if Deutsche BA and Comair, which don't operate to Britain, will keep the "World Images" schemes? IIRC the World Images for Deutsche BA were all designed by German artists, so taking away their artwork and replacing it with a stylized British flag would be kind of insulting I think. However, I do think that the agency BA used for the "Union Jack" livery could do a great job if they did something with the German flag.
I will miss some of the World designs, especially the "Waves and Cranes" one when it is on the 777.

The Chatham Dockyard scheme which is now to become the standard BA tail colour, is almost identical to BA's original scheme (used between 1974 and 1984).

The Utopia schemes were also playing havoc with maintenance schedules. Spare parts (such as rudders, trim tabs etc) had to be specially painted each time they were replaced or swapped from a similar aircraft (if it carried different tail colours). The sheer cost alone of these technical problems was instrumental in making BA re-think the sense of carrying multiple tail colours.

I'd be really sad if BA decided to repaint her DELFTBLUE DAYBREAK and DELFTBLAUWE DAGERAAD tails.
I saw them and I really liked it very much. I really think that these are the best tails of BA fleet.

Everyone,
Can someone tell me where you're all getting your info from regards world image painted aircraft being "re-painted" in Union Flag colours?
I work for the company and this is certainly news to me.As far as I know, aircraft painted with world images will stay as so.All aircraft still in "old" colours as well as all newly delivered aircraft, will be painted in Union Flag. This will give a split of 50% world images and 50% Union Flag.
I am into work on Monday,so shall make some enquiries. In the meantime,if anyone has "info" that i'm unaware of,please feel free to enlighten me.
Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know if BA painted an aircraft in the "Pause To Remember" scheme for this year?

My understanding was that BA were planning to repaint all theiir fleet in the Union Flag scheme but only as each aircraft was due for its normal re-paint. This means, of course, that the World Image tails will survive for afew more years.
