Flights Inside Texas Besides WN?

Sat Nov 11, 2000 6:45 pm

Folks,

As we all know, Southwest (WN) is THE dominant airline for flights inside the state of Texas.

Does anyone know what other airlines have major operations for intra-Texas flights? Just how big is American Airlines (AA) and Continental Airlines (CO) for their intra-Texas flights? Or are many of them done by the American Eagle or Continental Express regional affiliates?

You can get anywhere in Texas from DFW on American or American Eagle. The same goes for Houston on Continental and Continental Express. If you're in Austin or San Antonio, you're best bet is Southwest.

All have frequent and good service IMHO.

Intra-Texas service for CO is predominantly COEX. We do operate the 737-300,-500,-700,-800, MD-80, and 757-200 on our highest-density routes to Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Amarillo, El Paso, and Houston-Hobby (for 737 maintenance).

for AA,most of Texas' bigger cities are served by American(md-80,f-100) IAH may get a daily 757(i am not sure about that) but the smaller ones get American Eagle. I would say overall that WN is your best bet, they are cheap and they get to to your dest quickly. on other flights-that is a different story.

But then again, WN does not serve some smaller destinations like McAllen, Laredo, College Station, Beaumont/Port Arthur and Longview. All of these destinations I know for a fact are served by either American or Eagle. I am pretty sure that Continental or CO Express serves these cities as well.

It is my understanding that the city of Brownsville pays Continental a subsidy to operate to BRO. This has been the subject of contention in Brownsville, as many feel the taxpayers should not have to pays this additional tax (somewhere around $100K a month maybe?) when Southwest services Harlingen about 30 miles up the road. Inter city rivalry can be costly to the taxpayer.

Here in LBB we get WN 737's, COEX ERJ-145's, and AE ERJ-145's. LBB is bigger than AMA, the only reason that AMA has AA F100 is because they pay AA.

Austin and SAT have frequent flights on American and Delta Air Lines to Dallas/Ft Worth and Continental to Houston.

I believe that Dallas-Houston is one of the busiest air corridors in the USA, just behind the BOS-LGA-DCA and SFO-LAX operations.

Anyway, Austin is important enough that it even has direct flights to and from SJC (must be the large number of technology companies in the Austin area).
