Official 777 Flight Testing/Production

Thu Dec 18, 2014 4:36 pm

Hello all,
I was inspired by the current 787/747 threads to start this thread, dedicated to the production of the 777. They are still being rolled out and delivered at a pretty nice clip. If anybody wants to help take pictures and monitor production, that would be great.

Thanks all, and happy flying!

l/n 1271 is an interesting bird - only the 2nd 77W BBJ , it's HZ-MF9 for the Saudi Finance Ministry. Seems having 2 787BBJ's isn't enough for them.

They've got quite the VIP fleet. In addition to this 777 they have the mentioned 2 787s, a BBJ3, two BBJ1s, and three G300s.

And this is entirely separate from the royal family fleet.

I have a question that I haven't really found anywhere even though searches may be eluding me.

The 777-9X is a stretch of the 77W but does that make it the base model of the 777X family? After all, the 777-9X is 8-9 feet longer (depends on who you're reading it from) from the 77W but the 777-8X is 14 feet shorter than the 77W. Boeing has a huge backlog for the 777-9X which all signs points to that the 8X will take place several years after FA, rollout, flight testings of the 9X occurs.

So with that:
777-8X shrink
777-9X base
777-10X stretch if offered?
OR
777-8X base
777-9X stretch
777-10X double stretch again if ever offered.

Does anyone have the exact figures for how many 777's are rolled out per month? I thought it was 3, but it seems like it has to be more than that

I didnt know Saudia had any more 777's on order! I assume this is at PAE?

On a side note, I was in PAE over the summer (Aug. 28-30) and went on the factory tour. (There were hardly any 777's visible on those dates, most were hidden from sight behind the flightline, the only one in plain sight was an ET 77F) I saw the newest AA 77W in the factory, an CX 77W behind it, and an EK 77W behind CX. I have not heard anything about CX recieving a new 777, yet I assume that the EK one was delivered/painted. Was this CX A/c delivered?

I love the charts! Awesome work. I looked at the whole thing and saw that A6-ENV for Emirates stood out with 12 flight tests compared to the 5 fight tests average. Why may it have so many flights? Testing? Pre-delivery problems?

The "baseline" model of the 777 family is really the 777-200A - everything else is either a stretch, increased weights, or both from there.

If you're looking strictly at the 777X I think you'd have to call the -8 a stretch and the -9 a double (or triple, if you include the -300) stretch.

But that's not how they'll sell. The -9 will be the big seller, and the -8 a niche aircraft. So in the market they're behaving more like the -9 is the baseline and the -8 is a shrink.

The reason I signed up today is because this morning before this thread was started, I was thinking, "Wouldn't that be great if there was a 777 production thread?" So here I am.

Construction of the Everett Composite Wing Center (40-27) has started which is where all 777X wing manufacturing will take place. It will be 1.2 million square feet. They expect to have the building done by August 2015.

In similar news, St. Louis also started construction on their Composite Center which will provide empennage parts and other parts for the 777X wing. St. Louis will have 6 autoclaves and is going to be 367,000 square feet.

I heard from a friend that Swiss is getting their first one in January 2016 so about a year away. It will very soon be allocated a L/N since that's done about a year before delivery.

Unfortuneatly, I don't have access to L/Ns for 777s that far in advance.......

Is it purely random as to where they get painted or do certain liveries require a certain center, I'm thinking if its all paint vs lots of stickers etc.

I believe Boeing outsources the aircraft painting work to whichever centers have the capability to undertake the work in the time frame required when they can't do it themselves at PAE.

Planespotters.net lists the line numbers but it has skipped 1264 and 1266. Wouldn't they have those listed if line numbers after those two are already in test flights?

Those 2 have yet to do a B1 test flight . L/N 1264 is going to be the first B777 freighter for Saudi Arabian Airlines and L/N 1266 will go to Singapore airlines . Planespotters is following a blog to monitor the production list that post's when an aircraft has flown a B1 or delivered . So not entirely accurate

Use this link will help you see the production list :

Note that line 1264 is without engines.. so it won't be flying soon. on the Paine Field page, http://kpae.blogspot.com the last flight line shot shows two 777's at the back of the lot in short term storage..

I have a question that I haven't really found anywhere even though searches may be eluding me.The 777-9X is a stretch of the 77W but does that make it the base model of the 777X family? After all, the 777-9X is 8-9 feet longer (depends on who you're reading it from) from the 77W but the 777-8X is 14 feet shorter than the 77W. Boeing has a huge backlog for the 777-9X which all signs points to that the 8X will take place several years after FA, rollout, flight testings of the 9X occurs. So with that:777-8X shrink777-9X base777-10X stretch if offered?OR777-8X base777-9X stretch777-10X double stretch again if ever offered.
Quoting seabosdca (Reply 15):
The "baseline" model of the 777 family is really the 777-200A - everything else is either a stretch, increased weights, or both from there. If you're looking strictly at the 777X I think you'd have to call the -8 a stretch and the -9 a double (or triple, if you include the -300) stretch. But that's not how they'll sell. The -9 will be the big seller, and the -8 a niche aircraft. So in the market they're behaving more like the -9 is the baseline and the -8 is a shrink.

I think it is safe to assume that the new 777-X wing will be optimized for the 777-9, since that is the more popular model. In that case, the 777-8 should be considered a shrink. Right?
