Will Tomorow Be The Day Qantas Orders The A3XX?

Thu Nov 16, 2000 6:15 am

My source for this information is the Orders Egroups!

Tomorow is QF's 80th Annversary and there also "happens" to be a board meeting on the same day.
It is the perfect opportunity to officially announce the A3XX order!

What do you think?

NEW YORK, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Executives at Australia's Qantas Airways Ltd (QAN.AX) are recommending that the carrier's board approve orders for 18 Airbus Industrie (ARBU.UL) airliners valued at about $3.5 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported in its electronic edition Wednesday.
Citing sources familiar with the order, the paper said the potential order includes a dozen of the planned 555-seat A3XX superjumbo jets and six of Airbus's various smaller A330-200 and A330-300 models.

If the transaction is approved by Qantas directors on Wednesday, the carrier would become the second major Asian operator of Boeing Co (BA) planes to opt against the U.S. jet maker's own planned, bigger 747 jumbo jet, the "747X," the paper noted.

The board is expected to announce wether or not they will buy the A3XX. I dont believe they can afford them plus it would cost alot of money to transfer maintenaince (sp) crews from the 747 to the A3XX. The A3xx is a bit of a gamble because Airbus has not decided if it is going to make it or not. The 747x would probaly be a better choice because it wouldn't be as expensive. Whatever choice they make it better be a good one because they have major competion from the Singapore/Air New Zealand/ Annsett group.

There's no sweat lost if Airbus backs out. QF won't be spending one Aussie dollar on preparation until Airbus is fully committed to production.

Even being a Boeing fan, I myself would not turn down a deal like this. The A3XX is a brand new aircraft with all the latest technology at insane prices. Any airline placing launch orders at these prices is getting a hell of a bargain. I think Boeing will close the gap once Airbus has to lift the prices to more relaistic levels.

I really hope that the BA people on QF's board put a stop to at least the A330s. The777Man
