Yes, 16 years and 11 months after the Wright brothers taught the world to fly at Kittyhawk NC, Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Services was set up.
Only one other older airline using its original name today is still operating, KLM Dutch Royal Airlines. Unfortunately their operations were disrupted by WW2 so Qantas's PR claims it to be the "longest continously operating airline in the world" - a bit tacky I guess to base this claim on another's tragic misfortune. Nethertheless a great achievement - I wonder what air travel will be like in another 80 years' time?
Today is also the day that the Qantas board is expected to announce "the" decision: "To Airbus, or not to airbus, ...."

I wonder if the remoteness of Australia has helped QF achieve its longevity - the fact that they have tested the water and established many markets over the years that have turned out to be a success, without too much immediate competition?

I think Ansett celebrates either its 65th or 70th birthday soon also, which may lay some credence to my hypothesis.

I believe without a doubt that Australia's extremely scattered population centres has contributed to our aviation development and history.
As for the longevity of Qantas when the merger/takeover with Australian Airlines (nee Trans Australian) was being planned there were a couple of Canberra politicans (read utter and complete idiots) suggesting a new name be found for the combined airline! Fortunately, some sense prevailed and the Qantas named lived on - and may it do so for another 80 years.

PerthGloryFan,

I hope you are not suggesting that only a couple of our "Pollies" are idiots   .

It will be interesting to see what happens with the Ansett brand name once the NZ raping and pillaging has stopped?

Congragulations Qantas! Happy Birthday, Feliz Año nuevo!. Isn't Mexicana really old aswell? They began in 1921, KLM in 1919 and Qantas in 1920. Would that make Mexicana the 3rd oldest airline in the world? Thanks for info.
