The Official Airline Of Walt Disney World

Thu Nov 16, 2000 7:55 am

From 1972 to 1987, Eastern Airlines was the official carrier of Walt Disney World. It was a very impressive run. I remember flying them in 1981 and they passed out Mouse Ears and coloring books to us kids plus we got a free pass to eat breakfast with the Disney characters. Also, Eastern had a very neat ride at Disney World called "If you had wings." I wish that ride was still there. I am curious though of any airline is still Disney's official carrier. For a while it was Delta but I don't know anymore.

I don't think Disney has an official airlines anymore, that why they stopped those rides sponsered by Eastern and Delta.

I really loved "If You Had Wings." There is a website where it plays the song from this ride and shows scenes from it. You can probably find it if you use a good search engine. At the end you saw all these L-1011 Whisperliners flying by. There was a large model of an Eastern aircraft and a person in an Eastern uniform who could make reservations for you. It was a free ride, and in the evenings there was no line, so I would go on the ride over and over again. I remember the mouse masks they used to pass out and the activity books. I took quite a few kids there during those years. In my photo album, I have pictures of the kids on the plane wearing Donald Duck masks, so they weren't always mouse ears. The pictures show the Eastern interior with the wavy lines that looked like tiger stripes. They were blue, yellow, and red-orange, with brown mixed in with all three colors.

I guess Delta is the one now. I remember
a couple of years back, Delta introduced
direct non-stop flights Orlando-Frankfurt-
Orlando. I managed to obtain stickers
and a button showing Mickey with a Delta
B767 in the background. It also mentioned
Delta to be the official carrier of Disney World.
I got these in Germany back then in the early
90s. I still have one or two of these stickers
here with me. They are triangular shaped with
a green frame and about an inch and a half
wide.

Delta stopped being the official airline during "Leadership 7.5," probably around 1996. The L-1011 prototype cabin mockup that was part of the Disney exhibit is now in the Atlanta hangar that houses the DC-3. All references to Delta in the "Dreamflight" exhibit were painted over, but you could still make out the black nose and blue/red stripe on the L-1011 painted near the entrance.
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.
