Aircraft Schedule/Deployment

Fri Nov 17, 2000 1:19 am

I have a question regarding hub airports and international flights, particularly transatlantic. For example, if Continental uses a 777 from EWR to FCO today,
the same 777 returns to Newark tomorrow. On Friday, does that 777 go back
to FCO again....how does the airline schedule/determine where the plane will
be assigned to? How does this work?

While I can't speak for other airlines, I can say that at CO I have never seen one aircraft assigned to a specific route .. ie Ship 004 flying EWR-FCO-EWR-FCO-EWR-FCO, etc. Rather, the aircraft flow though the system ... ie EWR-FCO-EWR-MAN-EWR-CDG-IAH-NRT-EWR. This flow, subject to change, is posted in the computer system two days foward. There are often patterns within the flow ... ie five days out of seven flight 217 in will turn flight 1502 out, flight 1972 in turns 1492 out, etc.
Working very hard to Fly Right....

In my experience I find that a particular aircraft will fly a circuit say, consisting of 6 or 7 different flights, and then start the circuit over again...of course this gets altered when an aircraft is due for maintenence etc...I think most airlines have a group of people that decide which aircraft go where, and plan the schedule a certain time period in advance.

Thank you both. That's great. I just always wondered where my plane was going to next....
