Air Canada / Canadian Layoffs?

Fri Nov 17, 2000 11:53 am

Recently, Air Canada has gone on a hiring binge in a few select centres: YYC, YVR, YYZ and YUL. I can't understand why they would hire all these people and then lay them off in 3 months. Aren't there enough Canadian employees to help handle the Christmas rush? Does anybody know what type of guarantees these "new" employees are getting? It certainly wouldn't be good press for AC, if now they are bragging about hiring people, only to lay them off in Feburary or March?

Don't forget YWG. Their call center here has been greatly expanded.

Where did you hear this from? I would like to check it out, also I will ask some people I know at both AC and CP to try and find a little more into this topic.

I don;t think that there will be any lay-off's. AC/CP combined will take a lot more people then those two airlines had before the merger. AC has already expanded greatly with new services and new flights so I think that the demand for people especially in the Customer Service Depts.

I spoke with my brother-in-law in YVR, he works/worked for Canadi>n and he said that they hired a bunch of ramp people in the last few weeks. He doesn't understand why and what Air Canada is going to do with them after the Christmas rush. Things are especially up in the air with the unions at the moment. Does anybody know what is going to happen to the seniority lists? Will they be merged?

I don't think we'll see layoffs, rather they'll use the new staff for expansion, and to replace some staff that will retire with the upcoming package offerings (remember they made commitments to offer some early-retirement packages to staff as a result of the CP integration).

Also, YWG's maintenance base is expanding, and I believe YUL is as well.
