Bye Bye To The 747?

With all the ordering going on with the 777, and the 340 family of aircraft, have we seen the end of the 747 or the A3xx before it even flies?

It seems as if all flights, not just domestic are going to the more-often-smaller-aircraft type of service. With the recent JAL order of 777's with the use of these to the US it is just another example. BA is selling 4 747-400's and putting more 777's in service between London and the US. UAL has put its 777's in service to Asia with the rumor they may be looking at the 777-300.

Our domestic skies used to be full of wide bodies. Now it is rare except for certain flights or one certain airline (Delta). If we look over the International flights these days compare the number of flights with say 5 years ago. It has gone up but the planes are smaller. The 777 has had an amazing affect on this.

Sure some flights will still need a 747. But the number os these flights are becoming few and far between.

Will the beautiful 777 family provide the future for Boeing and will it cause Boeing to say Bye Bye to the 747?

The airlines seem to be adopting the philosophy of more frequencies with smaller jets. For example, BA might replace a daily 744 flight with 2 daily 777 flights.

I agree with Cba. A lot of the airlines are using the greater frequency argument as a marketing tool. A lot of people prefer a greater frequency. There will still be a place for the 747, but there will be more use of the smaller efficient planes to bolster the frequency to key centres.

Right! Everywhere you see Airlines using greater frequencies. At CGN for example we have very hight frequencies to Paris and Zurich with very small planes.

And (no question) the 777 production is not good for the 747 because Airlines say: "hmm, my 747 isn´t full of people, I change it into a 777".

I think there will be everytime a place for the 747, because the aviation worldwide is growing constant.

Airbus wouldn´t start the very expensive project of A3XX if there won´t be a market for it.

Further, Boeing would never think about a longer 747-version, if ther won´t be a market. They want to prevent that Airbus will have success with their A3XX and gets the whole market of this range.

Airlines have to use their planes as they are needed on the routes. If the demand on a route is to high for one B777, A340 or MD11 and to low for a second machine of this type, they would never use a second one but they place a 747.

Well, as there´s a very strong growing aviation market, the 767-routes will sometimes be changed into 777-routes and the 777-routes will be changed into 747-400-routes, and so the market needs.

...and by the way: the 747 is a more imposing flagship! Better than 777!

I Have Played One Game...

I have played one free airline management game (airpro) and I have seen the grow of aviation market:
The route HKG-Chicago, for example. In 1985 I have used B767, later -- DC-10, in 1990 -- MD-11 and in 1995 -- two B767, in 1998 -- 1 B777 and at the last -- the 747. I thing that after some years there would be market for two 747. So 747x or A3XX is maked not for now, they will have a market only for some years. Boeing and Airbus know that, but airbus tried to make A3XX without competitors (they thought, that they would get all super jumbo market in 2010-2020). Boeing heard about this airliner and tried to compete with him. If there would be only one airliner, (B747X or A3XX) manufactorer of it would conquer all superjumbos market, and later leaving another manufactorer to compete with Bombardier or Embraer.
