Air Rage On An AirNZ Flight

I found this in aus.aviation... always a worthy source.

Drunk Creates Mayhem On Air NZ Trans Pacific Flight

Nov 17, 2000

A drunken Australian passenger kicked the pilot in the groin and assaulted
eight others on board an Air New Zealand Boeing 747-400 flight from Sydney
to Los Angeles with 265 passengers and 17 crew on board last Friday.

Two flight officers wrestled with the man after he groped hostesses, smashed
a food tray, punched the walls of the plane and said he wanted to kill
Americans in Guatemala, the New Zealand Herald reported.

Erickson Alfonso Morales, 30, had consumed prescription drugs and numerous
glasses of wine, said the Herald.

Once aboard, he asked a flight attendant to open a bottle of wine he had
with him but was refused.

Flight attendant Camilla Forsling said that early in the journey, Morales
started yelling and swearing when she offered him a glass of water, then
smashed a woman's food tray, splashing her with wine.

He started harassing two flight attendants, stroking their hands, shoulders
and necks, and shouting obscenities.

One passenger, Ms J. C. Milner, recounted how Morales told her he was going
to Guatemala to take part in an anti-America ""revolution'', that he might
have to kill some Americans and thus risked being shot.

Afraid, Ms Milner tried to return to her seat but Morales pinned her arms
against the wall until a male flight attendant came to her rescue.

He shouted constantly and cursed over a four-hour period. After hours of
abuse, flight staff asked the pilots to have the man restrained, but he
fought back, kicking a pilot in the groin.

It took three other people to bring him to the ground and put him in
handcuffs. Morales sobered up eventually towards the end of the flight and
was given biscuits and tea by the flight attendants.

At Los Angeles, he was arrested by armed FBI agents and airport police and
was charged with assault and intimidation.

Morales said later that he was frustrated with his life, family and

He had at least five servings of wine before losing count of how much he had
drunk and could remember little of the flight, he said.

Before Guatemalan-born Morales boarded the flight, he took one tablet of the
anti-depressant Cipramil and a tablet of Endromil for his blood pressure,
which he claimed his doctor had switched him to because it would not have a
negative reaction with alcohol.

The executive director of the New Zealand Board of Airline Representatives,
Mr Stewart Milne, said the incident highlighted a need for the government to
sort out laws for international flights.

Crimes on foreign planes coming to New Zealand, for example, fell into a
"grey" legal area where it was difficult to sort out jurisdiction, he said.
"It's an issue of considerable concern. We have been pressing for changes."

Transport Minister Mark Gosche said the government was looking into the
problem and hoped to bring in new laws next year. A full solution could be
in place by 2002.

Civil Aviation Authority spokesman Martyn Gosling said air-rage incidents
were increasing. They could be sparked by stress, drunkenness, being cramped
up or being barred from smoking.

I read the report in the paper. It sounds like it was a hell of a flight. This air rage issue seems to be big at the moment, especially after what happened on that Southwest flight.
