Planes You'll Miss Most When They're Gone

Sun Nov 19, 2000 12:34 pm

I think that I'll miss the 727, 757, and especially MD-80 when they're gone. What plane will you miss most, why, and what airline's colours you'll miss them in most?

For me, I will miss the DC-10s and the MD-11s... they are such great planes... a pity they will be going soon... not to forget the L1011s too.

i'll miss those classic old 747s...not to mention the L-1011s, DC-10s, 727s, 737s, and any other aircraft that is priviliged enough to fly around this bright green and blue earth...i don't think i could imagine a world where aircraft do not exist...i say we give thanks to all those persons whose extraordinary ideas let to flight as we know it today...btw is there anything special planned to celebrate 100 years of powered flight??

I already miss the 747s in PAN AM's colors but I will miss the 727-200s even more. No mater what the PA 727 has been through hell and back twice very soon for a third time when PA 3 retires them for either 717s or A318s when they get more money to buy newer aircraft to replace the fleet they currently have in which maintinance and fuel costs for these magestic planes must be sky rocketing. Or who knows PA 3 will complete PA's 1 order for the A320s back in the mid 1980s. Right now as soon as PA gets more cash flowing I will predict that PA will eventually get rid of the 727s for more fuel efficient aircraft as well as a money saver in maintinance costs such as the A318, A320, 717, maybe even the 737NG if PA 3 plans to expand westward or even to destinations in Canada and the Carribbean within the next ten years.

I definitely will miss the workhorse of our (Northwest's)fleet...the classic DC-9 wearing our current livery. I will also miss the 727-200 painted in either our livery or Delta's (both interim and new).

MD-80s!!!

I think I'll have to go into therapy when they are gone. Well not really, but I'll be sad. What am I going to do when AS gets rid of them? I'll also mis the 727 and 767 (although its going to be a long time for the 767, thankfully). The 747 classics are sad too. I was sad when the Metros left Horizon.

737-200 & 727s: these planes are such workhorses and have done so much for airlines - they also look great from front angles. DC10: so distinctive - I remember I would always look for an "engine-on-top" plane when just a tot, going out to the airport.

I`ll miss the great-looking SAS DC-9s. They are what most people think of when they hear SAS, and even though the NG737 will be a fine replacement, the cozy douglas style will be gone.
Other aircraft: the MD-11, as in my opinion it is one of the best-looking aircraft flying..Too bad they`ll all become freighters..

Folks,

I think the planes people will miss most are the DC-10's, L1011's and 727-200's.

Both the DC-10 and L1011 are rapidly disappearing from the major airlines, and stricter environmental standards will finally doom the 727-200 by 2005.

As for the MD-80's disappearing, if the airlines are willing to re-engine the planes with more modern engines (e.g., replace the original Pratt & Whitney JT8D-217's with the PW6000 series), then the MD-80 could soldier on in AA and TWA service until at least 2015.

Hi!

The planes that I will surely miss are all the first generation jets and specially these ones:

Still flying

DC-8, B. 707, Bac 1-11, IL62, VC10, TU134, TU154, B. 720.

Not flying anymore

CV880, CV990, Trident, Caravelle, Mercure.

Regards.

PIA F-27's especially AP-BAL which I seem to get regularly on the LHE-ISB route. She is falling to bits but still a joy to fly in. Also the Trident, which ceased flying ages ago but was my first jet flight (LHE - KHI) in '66.

727's, DC10's, MD-11, and the L1011. I wish Lockheed or Boeing could come up with an advanced version of these aircraft using the same body.

I'll miss the Delta L1011 when it is phased out of service.
Plane I'll miss because of its color scheme : Canadian Airlines 737-200, a very sharp looking plane in the CP livery (non-Proud Wings, non AC).

Having grown up with the first generation of jets, I already miss the DC-8 (especially in the old Swissair and KLM liveries) and 707 (PanAm and Air India).

I'll be sure to miss the 747 -100 and -200 airplanes; these are already becoming rarities. I also have a soft spot for the older DC-9s (series 10 and -30).

I will miss the DC-10, MD-11 and L1011 the most, to me there is just something about those planes that makes me happy to see one, I also wish Airbus or Boeing would come out with an advanced trijet that looks similar to the above aircraft.

The 727-200 and 737-200 are my picks. The legends of loud aviation. How can you ever recreate the thrills of flight like the reverse thrust on a 737-200 landing from row 15? Or a 727-200 takeoff from row 35 where the high pitch frequencies and strange noises are constantly changing due to power adjustments. I love the JT8D!

I will Miss the 757 the most. Definitley in the AA colors and stuff... I hope I will be able to fly one for AA before they retire them ... I realize that it will be a while before they retire them, but does anyone know just how long? Because they have still ordered more 757 that havent been delivered yet. Also, I will definitley miss the 747-200 alot, they are just great planes. BA 747-200 were just so nice.

I´ll miss most DC10 and L-1011.

In Germany they are rare planes. Condor and Lufthansa sold all DC10 and the L-1011 of LTU...it´s a very long time ago.

But it becomes more and more interesting to see one of these planes here because of rarity of them.

TriStars for sure. They are still around here with BWIA but not for much longer - they have already grounded 2 and plan to sell them all off soon, once they decide upon a replacement. The BWee TriStar is a Caribbean classic, it will be very sad to see them go.

CV990, are the Caravelles all gone? Up to 2 years ago 15 were still in service, with 3 flying in Colombia for Lineas Aereas Suramericanas Colombia. I know that they were being imperiled by the Stage 3 noise ordinance which came into effect in 2000, though.

I also miss BWee's DC9s - that roar on take-off is still etched in my mind.
