FRA Remote Parking

Sun Nov 19, 2000 7:11 pm

Hello,

Two weeks ago, I have noticed that many aircraft were parked in a remote place at FRA.

This included many Lufthansa Cargo aircraft (747-200Fs and MD-11Fs) in the LH area, but also a SAA 747-300, and a Qantas 747-400.

Could anyone provide me some more information about how many places there are for aircraft there, and what airlines are used to use them.

This might not be helpful,
but last December my flight SQ 25 from JFK arrived about 1.5 hour earlier than scheduled because of the strong tail winds (took less than 6 hours) and we had to park at the remote parking area. However the plane was later pulled into one of the gates for the second leg to SIN.

I know that many airlines that are parked at FRA the whole day naturally use these spots.

That´s right, a lot of planes ar parked in a remote area at FRA. Here´s the reason:

A lot of planes from far away (South Africa, Australia, Namibia) come early in the morning to FRA and fly back late in the evening. They place their planes the whole day at FRA.

But there is no place for them at the gates. FRA has not the capacity to leave the planes the whole day at the docking bridges.

So the airport gives discounts to all Airlines, which allow to put their planes to a remoted parking position. The most airlines use this offer and so, after people left an arrived plane and all necessary work is done, the planes where pulled to the back of the airport, to make place for the next plane, which is sometimes waiting (!) on the taxiway for that gate.

Here are some examples of airlines:
Air Namibia
Air Seychelles
Air Zimbabwe
Condor
Ethiopian Airlines
Lufthansa
LTU
Qantas
Singapore Airlines
South African Airways
Thai Airways International

... there are much more. But I can´t list all of them.

How you can see, most of them come from Africa, and south-east of Asia. But german Airlines with long stay, use the area too.

One thing: You will never see a plane of Lufthansa Cargo in the remote area.
What you have noticed here is the cargo port of FRA, which is between the mentioned area and the LH hangars.

Hello,

Thank you for the information!

I´m sorry.

I only know that 5 years ago, chapter 1 and chapter 2 planes had to pay about 100% more for landing than chapter 3 planes.

I Hope you get more information from other users.

As far as I know, chapter 1 airplanes are not allowed since 1985.

http://www.dalnet.se/sasfss/

here you can find lots of detailed IAL and ASIR maps of airports all over the world. Also FRA is in the list of airports you can download a free map of. Really a cool site which may give you the information you need..

Hi Alain,

Actually NIGHTFLY said it all! beside the airlines he mentioned, ther are several airlines that in most cases park overthere even if they only come for a 1-2 hours turnaround. Some include:

Sibir (TU154 or TU204)
Air Algerie (737)
El Al
Albanian Airlines (TU134)
sometimes Air Kasakstan (A310)

I have check the maps i have for FRA but couldn't find any that showes the exact number of Parking lots.
You can see them very close when you depart from RWY 180. I would guess that there are about 20 parking lots.

Hi Nightfly,

just a small correction:
SQ has no layover in FRA, ´cause their flight, arriving FRA from SIN in the morning, continues 2h later to JFK. Their flight, arriving FRA from JFK around 11am, continues 1h later to SIN. And their flight, arriving from SIN in the afternoon, goes back to its homebase 2h later. SQ´s 744s as far as I know are on docking position the whole time.
I´m not sure about Air Namibia, I thought they continue their flights to LHR. Is this correct?

Hi,

Air Namibia (SW) has increased flights to FRA after LH suspended WDH operation.

They have four flights WDH-FRA, one of which (SW285 on Day 5 arrives FRA in the morning and continues to LHR)
Two other trips go via MUC.

Hi Sydneysider,

I think you are right with Singapore Airlines. It would make no sense to pull the big Airplanes away for this time.

I had my information on a video of FRA, where a Singapore 747-400 is parked far back near RWY 18.

Amir: I know that you meaned that. I never would believe that an enthusiast on aviation who´s coming from Frankfurt would affirm that FRA only has 20 parking positions at all.

Nightfly,
What year was the video made? Before SIA starts their daily service to JFK (in 1998 I think), on some days the 744 arrives FRA early in the morning and returning to SIN in the evening. Probably the video was made during that times. Cheers!

The video came out in 1998. I think the big part of it was filmed between 1995 and 1998. So it agrees with your notice.

I'm Living Near FRA, Some Statements

Tue Nov 21, 2000 7:28 am

Hi

I'm a spotter living near FRA!

These so called OPPs (Outside Park Position) are the most cheapest in FRA and are very popular with airlines that cannot afford paking at the gate.

On the other hand it's a "day storage" Area. For Example Qnatas Jumbos are towed there after there arrival and deboarding at 0700 am. They are resting overday at these remote aprking positions til the late evening for their return to down under.

El Al likes this positions due to security reasons..
