What Happened To The Boeing 787?

Mon Nov 20, 2000 12:20 pm

My friend has a clipping from the Swedish/Finnish newspaper Aftonbladet from a few years back that has a picture of a concept 787 and a brief article detailing the project. I don't have the article with me, and my friend is in Finland and I am in ATL, but I do remember it being a sort of launch announcement. Did Boeing just shelve the plan, and effectively give Airbus the upper hand in the super-jumbo market.

Just in case you don't know, the 787 was to be a double decker much like the 3XX.

Boeing has yet to designate any aircraft 787.

The Boeing double-decker project was referred to as the NLA ("New Large Aircraft"). In addition to the NLA and A3XX, McDonnell Douglas was also studying a superjumbo dubbed MD-12.

The graphic that I saw, courtesy Boeing, had the title Boeing 787.

Hi,
i saw a drawing in an old issue of FlightInternational regarding a four engined singledeck Boeing 787.
It resembled very much to an enlarged 777 with four engines.
In the same article I saw also a picture of a lenghtened passenger variant of the C-17/MD-17.
Those were just some proposal from Boeing for a next generation very large aircraft but they subsequently opted for an improved and enlarged 747 variant.

Ciao

I heard from a member on this forum that the original 747-500 and 600 plans (the ones with the new wing design and that were scrapped) were actually to be called the 787.

I believe the 787 will replace the 737 eventually to compete better with the A320 family. This is the one area where Boeing is lacking. Even though I am a huge Boeing fan, I believe Airbus has a superior short/medium-haul product with the A320 family. Hopefully the 787 will be more apt to compete with the A32o family with wider fusalage, newer technology, etc...
