BDL Hartford

I'll be visiting family near Hartford this week. I've never been to BDL and was wondering if it is worth my time to go there to photograph planes. Are there even any carriers from outside North America there?

While you'll see a good variety of aircraft, there's not much traffic besides U.S. domestics. Air Ontario operates flights to Toronto, and there are weekend charters to Mexico, Aruba, etc., but you won't find all that much.

However, it is among the fastest growing airports in the world -- 25 percent over last year -- thanks to the addition of Southwest Airlines, America West and other new service.

It's a great airport for the market size. If the weather is bad, BDL gets diversions from JFK, EWR and BOS. Also, the airport is undergoing a major expansion.

I don't think Bradley has any international carriers, but there is a road that runs around the airport completely that gives you a decent view of the runways. There also is quite a large air museum on the property (watch the signs carefully though, I found it difficult to find). The museum is mostly military, but there are a few airliners there too (a Caravelle as I recall, to name one)

As far as international goes, just Air Ontario to YYZ and Air Alliance to YUL. Int'l charters operated by Omni Airlines DC10 and Canada 3000 this year (sometimes North American Air and Mexicana operate them too--but i'm not sure about this year). Cargo 747's come in from Europe and are operated by Atlas Air or Cargolux(?) i believe. Hope you choose to visit BDL---pretty good for spotting, activity, and variety of aircraft and airlines (most US majors and some smaller ones)---granted, it's not BOS!

BDL is used by airplanes going to BOS or JFK that have to divert for weather or other reasons. Have seen numerous 747s and Concorde (BA and AF) lined up on the taxiway along east side of airport being refueled and waiting out the delay. Because the flight back to JFK or BOS is short and they usually take on just enough fuel to make the short hop, the takeoffs were generally spectacular.

If you would like to take pictures, then go to the long hallway that connects Terminal A and Terminal B. It is also near the lobby of the airport hotel. From there you can see Southwest, America West and USAirways if you are there at the right time.

I forgot to mention that you can also see Continental from that hallway. Also, there is a food court in Terminal A near the departure gates where you can see the United Airlines jets. On the other side of the lobby there, there is a Pizza Hut that has some more views of USAirways.

Too bad American doesn't still operate 727s and MD-82s there. I remember them from not too long ago. I'm originally from Hartford (actually East Windsor), but I live in Alabama now.

American still has their super 80's operate BDL-DFW and BDL-MIA as well as some of the BDL-ORD (rest are 738). The 738 are used for BDL-ORD and BDL-LAX. The 757 is used for BDL-SJU.

Also, just checked schedules, USAirways currently flies 7 daily 757 flights into BDL---not that bad!
