SIA To Vancouver

Wed Nov 22, 2000 5:18 am

Why does SIA fly only three times a week to Vancouver? Why don't they fly daily? CX flies twice daily and does really well on their flights and they use B744's! SIA uses A343...are they making money in YVR?

One of the CX flights continues on to New York. As well, there is a large expat Hong Kongese population in Vancouver, hence the need for two daily flights with 744 aircraft.

Remember, SIA used to fly into YVR with 743 aircraft, but downgraded to A340's a few years ago. I've heard that most of the passengers on this flight are destined for Seoul, not Singapore. SIA does have traffic rights for SEL-YVR. There just isn't that much traffic to Singapore from Canada as there is to Hong Kong. Maybe the lack of continuing passengers prevent this route from being upgraded to daily.

Are the making money? On the Seoul leg, you bet your ass they are! Any flight from North America to Seoul is jammed packed. SIA's is no exception. I tried in vain to book a flight to Seoul last summer and couldn't find anything from any North American departure point!

Don't forget, SIA codeshares with Air Canada now. AC already operate into Seoul four times a week. The three a week with SIA make it a daily flight. Same thing pretty much as sending your own aircraft in daily.

That's because there are many HKG immigrant that lives in vancouver. Hence twice daily flights is needed.

In fact, there are so many Chinese and Taiwanese in Vancouver that both Taiwan and HKG have twice daily flights to Vancouver.

I believe that EVA/AC code share on YVR. MWF uses EVA 744, the rest of time an Air Canada A343 is used. China Airlines also serves YVR

Isn't there a restriction in the bilateral between Singapore and Canada that says that, at this time, there can be no more than 3 flights per week between Vancouver and Singapore?

CX's 3 out of 14 weekly YVR-HKG v.v. is now operated by A343.

meanwhile, I think SIA is earning profits for Vancouver station. SQ's A343 flights to YVR will soon be switched to B772.

Is it a good thing or a bad thing that SIA are switching to a B772?

Good thing. The 772 can fit more passengers and has a bigger business class section. Don't forget, SIA is dumping all their A340s.
