Upperdeck Of 747Fs

ON 747 Freighters, what is the upperdeck used for? LIke on Atlas, Cargolux, Polar, Etc. Even on Airline freighters like BA and SIA, what do they use the upper deck for? Do they have seats there? Also, is there usually only the two flight crew onboard or is there a flightattendant....like for the long-haul pacific flights, to serve them meals etc.

In Lufthansa Cargo´s 747C there are 3-5 seats.
In their 747SF are 9-18 seats.
I´ve seen a film on that, the seats looked like F class.
There can also be a seat pallet in the main deck´s very aft.

who gets to sit in these seats?

Anyone, like just buy a regular ticket? Or is it company ppl? Cuz i imagine that there probably isn't much inflight service?

I´ve been on a LH B747F (pure freighter, not a converted passenger one) once. It reminded me a bit of a truck. A bit austere like Airsicknessbag wrote with a few normal economyclass-seats and "beds" in the very back. No FA. The captain has to prepare is own coffee. A very "frugal" folding stair leads up to the upper deck.
Nothing like you would expect on a plane worth about 150 million bucks even i its a "truck".

Issue With Customs

Hello,

I was told there were some studies conducted either by Boeing or some 747F operators to determine if it would be possible to sell revenue seats on the upper deck, especially for 747-400Fs which would have features the pax-version upper deck.
But this would have been rejected because of the custom issues.

Anyone heard about this please?

Cargolux

I just came back from Los Angeles to Luxembourg on Cargolux 744F LX-OCV. The upper deck on all our 10 aircraft is equipped as follows :

Cockpit (of course), behind that on the starboard side a little galley and 2 10-men liferafts, on the port side the emergency exit with the slide. Then on the starboard side you get have the door that leads to the ladder down to main deck, opposite on the port side is the lavatory. Then you have 6 Business Class-like seats (just as shown on Chris Coduto's photo) posted by FlyVirgin744, one couple on the starboard side, 2 rows with 2 seats each on the port side. At the end of the upper deck is a little door that leads to a small room with 2 bunks for crew rest. The 744F has 3 passenger windows on each side of the upper deck. As you see on Chris's picture, the second row on the port and the row on the starboard side have 2 windows each, the third window leads into the crew rest compartment.

"Passengers" on these flights are usually deadheading crew members, Cargolux employees on business or holiday travel and cargo attendants (e.g. for horses). It is not possible to buy a ticket for these flights.

Service is minimal as there's no flight attendant on board. The passengers enjoy a cold meal while the crew gets warm meals, the reason for that is that it is too dangerous for the passengers to operate the oven.. they could burn down the aircraft by putting plastic plates in the oven etc.... there are snacks, sandwiches and cold and hot drinks available. The crew is usually very open-minded towards aviation-interested passengers so that I could enjoy a jumpseat on most sectors.

All in all it is a real fun to travel on Cargolux

I believe that the A3XX will be the ultimate Combi. Straight-through seating on the upper deck for, say, 200, and straight-through cargo on the mid-deck, and passenger luggage in the regular holds. That could definitely make money on long, thin, primarily-cargo flights.

WHat about on like MD-11 freighters? Is there much crew/passenger space in the front?

Yes, there are a couple of seats in the front of our MD-11's, not anywhere enar the space of the top deck of a 747. Again, used for crew resting, loadmasters for offline ops, special couriers, animal trainers, and employees who can hitch a ride. There are usually only 2, but up to 5 on a few of ours.
