American's Legroom

I just returned from my first experience with American's extended legroom. I admit...I was skeptical at first.! I am really impressed with the extra room. There is a significant difference. For those of you who have had the pleasure of this new arrangement, what are your thoughts? I was on an MD-80...does anyone know the exact numbers on the seat pitch? How does this compare with other airlines (i.e. United Shuttle or Southwest)? Thanks.

I was also a little wary of just how much legroom I would be recieving with the "more legroom throughout coach". But, like you, I was amazed at how much that added 3 or so inches really helps. I don't have to request a bulkhead anymore to be comfortable. However, if you are 6'5", then you will probably still feel a little cramped.

I believe that AA's seat pitch is similar to United's Economy Plus, but with AA, you don't have to pay extra. I think this is a marvelous campaign by AA to attract customers and it's great for us loyals as well.

Does anyone know when the 777 fleet will be finished with the changes? I will be flying DFW-zRH on Dec. 30th.

The seat pitch ranges from 33-35 '' on the AA planes. The seats ahead of the emergency exits are all pretty much at 34/35, compared to 31/32 inches before. The Emergency Exit row has a 39 '' pitch.
First Class is at 38.

UA Economy Plus is supposed to be 35-36 inches.

Southwest planes range from 31-33 inches. The aircraft without the "lounge seating" typically have more legroom than those that do. The new 737-700s are quite comfortable...similar seats/pitch to AS, although I have to admit I like the AS interior colors a bit better

Seat pitch was increased from an average of 31' to an average of 36'.

yeah i was impressed too, it really did make a difference. I went from AA to NWA on one trip and boy did NWA suck when it came to being compared to AA and the legroom!

I found the right topic to be flying on AA in a month.  
I'll be looking foward to expierence on the "new" AA.

I think the new seat pitch is great. I like it so much that I have managed to fly enough on American to achieve AAdvantage Gold status. If you have ever been on the US Airways Shuttle or Delta Shuttle, it is quite similar to their 727 and A320 seat pitch. I hope their business increases enough for them to consider it worthwhile enough to keep it. I remember that TWA did this a few years ago, but it didn't last. But when I flew on a TWA 727 with the increased pitch, I didn't really notice any difference. But I noticed quite a difference on American.

i'm converted too... i used to fly mostly with UA for its star alliance connections to my home carrier SQ, hence allowing me to earn mileage on krisflyer, but after trying AA once i'm converted... interestingly i flew SFO-ORD on an MD-80 with more legroom right after SIN-HKG-SFO on an SQ 744 and i had a much better flight with AA... my travel companions thought i was nuts, how could you prefer AA which has no PTVs, etc etc, but the seat legroom was all that mattered to if AA were to add features such as PTVs on more planes, they are going to be favorite carrier by far.

I have had more legroom on MD-80's and it is amazing what a couple of extra inches does! Luckily my home airline happens to be AA, that way I can stretch out in coach

The verdict is in: AA's More Room Throughout Coach is AWESOME!

I have non-reved several times on the MD-80 & 757 -- holy GOD! What a difference! I'm 6'2" and am actually comfortable! I can stretch out my legs all the way, recline the seat back, adjust my 6-way headrest and get some half-decent sleep!

Keep doing what you're doing AA!

Yes, I agree that it rocks, but does anybody out there know if AA is happy with their "Moreroom" program? Is it making them money? Are they winning over FF's from the other majors. I'm sure that they have gotten some disgruntled UA FF's, but is there really enough demand for it out there that AA is making more money from it? Let's face it, airlines don't do things just to please passengers, but if pleasing passengers is earning them enough money, that's a whole new story!

Because of the fact that most AA flights depart with at least some coach seats still available, the impact will most likely be felt the most by standby and non-rev passengers. Since most airlines make their money off of first and biz class, I would imagine that AA would not mind sacrificing a few low-revenue coach seats for overall benefit of its passengers.

We at AA, love the "More room throughout coach"Everyday Passengers tell me how much of a difference it makes. Myself, Im 6'2 and will not non-rev on any other carrier but my own. Its almost like flying First class all the time.The B737-800's are beautiful, they're my favorite. The 777's will be modified starting early 2001, they will also feature the new "Flagship Suite" which is the most beautiful suite in the skies, it's awesome i will try to get pics. to display in the cabin pics. area. By mid 2001 the entire fleet will me done.

AA's more legroom is a huge success. To me all a/c benefitted, however on the 4+ hrs ORD-LAX segments on MD80's the space was most appreciated. Was able to stretch out some more and catch up on reading with out any interruptions!

Thanks for the replies. I remember seeing an AA VP on the Today Show when the moreroom program first started and now I remember him saying exactly what a lot of you just said. I'm just glad that AA realized this and has given us coach passengers some much needed pampering. Especially on those long MD-80 flights which were just painful for me (I'm 6'6''). Thanks AA, and you've kept me coming back time for a while to come.

All the seats which are thrown out by AA will sum up to some tons in wheigt which they don´t have to haul around and save some fuel.
And I guess that the passengers like this extra space when they fly. Hopefully this will make other Airlines follow.
If not, AA might see themselves forced to bring back some seats to catch up the popularity they gained   .
I also guess that more space for the passengers leads to a better atmosphere ( mood ? ) on board.

Well, now that coach has more legroom, what about the first classers (if that is even word). Coach is slowly becoming more and more like First class, so I think AA needs to make some rennovations to the First class section.

Last time I flew first class AA and the seats were all torn, and the leather was beat up. They should fix that.
