Hand Luggage Weight Limits?

Thu Nov 30, 2000 4:22 am

Do anyone know if there is a standard hand luggage weight limit or company has its own rules?

Is there any IATA/FAA/JAR regulation about this?

Some companies have a limit of 6 kgs but I am very interested to know if the reason for this is a government rule

thanks

I do believe at least the FAA lets the airlines decide.

Don't hold me to this;

As a general rule (it's not always applicable) US carriers allow up to two pieces of baggage weighing upto 20kg. (44lbs)

European carriers allow one piece (in coach) of baggage weighing upto 6kg. (13lbs)

Like I said, don't hold me to it, but it tends to work out like that.

It's not a government rule - it's just the way the airlines have it. There are no rules (either JAA or FAA) relating to such a thing directly.

Hand luggage weight must not exceed 5KG, and the sum of the dimensions must not be more than 115cm.
