Because there is a lot less MD-80's in their fleet than the DC-9, which is why they were retired faster.

There were only 8 MD80s and they were a pain to keep as far maintanence and pilot training.

Northwest's fleet renewal plan began based on the simplification of the fleet that is well underway now.

The MD80s went
The 727s are going now
The DC10s will go
(first ones in about 1 year..all gone in 4)
The DC9s are going now and will go by about 2005-7.

and Northwest will have the youngest fleet it has had in a VERY long time.

Did anyone ever fly an NW MD80? were they as bad as everyone says the USAir MD80s are?

Nwa747-400,
Got any info on when they're announcing DC-10 replacements and how fast they will be delivered?
Where do you get your information from? You seem to know a lot about Northwest. Do you work at Northwest?

I spoke with a NW flight crew after my DC-10-40 flight yesterday. They indicated that the latest word from NW management is that the DC-10's will starting retiring in 3-5 years.

The DC-9-10's are being retired now. There's less than ten in the fleet now. They are being replaced as new deliveries of the Avros arrive.

No I don't work for Northwest.

Just a huge fan!!So I always ask ground crews, FAs, pilots questions and read up on them alot.

The DC10s 3-5 yrs sounds about right. I am just hoping it will be sooner cause I really want to see a new widebody.

There are only about 8 DC9-10s left and they are going I believe with the Avros as Mark mentioned.
