Info On Kemayoran Airport

Thu Nov 30, 2000 10:42 pm

Anybody knows any website containing information about Jakarta's former international airport during its operational years? I think the call sign for Kemayoran is JAK. If possible I would like to obtain historical information and pictures of the airport. The airport was closed in 1986, although international flights was stopped in the late seventies.

I spent my childhood near the airport, since my parents' house is only around 1.5 km from the airport (in fact my parents' house is directly under the landing/take-off path).

Last time I went there was on June 1999. As far as I know the two runways are still intact, although they are used as roads (I must admit that they are very smooth, pacing my mother's car at around 120 km/h like I never experienced before in any highways). The former terminal building is still intact too, although it's been tranformed into some kind of offices. The Control Tower is still there, but it's a restricted area, so I could not get close to it, although I could get a glimpse of it behind the tall grass. It looked quite derelict. There are still a couple of airplanes left (namely a DC6 and a CL44, both ex-Bayu Airlines, although both are in a very bad condition). The rest of the airport have been transformed into apartment blocks and exhibition halls. The latest news I've read is that the goverment is going to build a IT-Center, together with the long-overdue Jakarta Tower.

I dunno whether any of you ever been to Kemayoran, but I think it's a historic aviation place in the Far East region. It was the main terminus of KNILM (KLM's Indonesian Division before the WW II), also the homebase of their rare DC5s in the early forties, before the Japanese Occupation. Also it's part of QANTAS' Kangaroo route from Sidney-London in the fifties, using Connies.

It's kinda sad seeing historic airports like Kai Tak, S'pore Kallang and Jakarta's Kemayoran being demolished....
