Is Allegiant Sacrificing A320 For Parts?

Fri May 20, 2016 7:48 pm

G4 recently took delivery of a used 320 from China Eastern (line 1108) but oddly it is in storage in Tucson and registered N551PT in which the PT means parts. By that I mean that in the past G4 has put PT in the registration of aircraft acquired for parts.

DL did the same thing...picking up several used MD90's to be used as organ donors for the fleet of active MD90's

Maybe they want to use the engines to replace ones that blow on climb?

Never, ever flying these guys.

A used A320 is certainly the cheapest way to acquire a pair of CFM-56 engines. It is surprisingly fortuitous timing of the purchase.

I am as aware as many on their latest streak of mishaps..... However I got stuck in RIC last friday while nonreving.
They had a A320 nonstop to JAX for $66.... So I paused and thought, well with FAA oversight this should be the safest airline to fly now days...... Flight was uneventfull!

Allegiant definitely uses this model to get parts. Its not unusual for them.

I'm surprised that GECAS couldn't find a better deal for a lease, either as a passenger frame or a freighter conversion, rather than selling it to Allegiant (Sunrise Asset). The FAA database notes that the registration was canceled last November, meaning that this plane has likely been broken up completely.

As for Delta and the MD-90, parts are becoming more expensive for the MD-80/MD-90 fleet, and Delta has been buying up older planes for parts.

CFM56? Are you sure? I thought China Eastern flew the V2500.. Didn't United buy a pile of them??

Yes this particular aircraft has CFM56 engines.

Also interesting to note that Allegiant has two brand new A320's on order.

No need for the snark, according to Planespotters.net they have two that are due soon. It's still a surprise to the public who thinks Allegiant just operates old un-maintained planes.

The first one emerged from final assembly in Toulouse not so long ago.

Probably should have pointed that out in a new thread, as it appears G4 has altered their livery.

I am not positive here so someone can correct me if I am wrong. I believe that early A320s had relatively low hour and cycle limits which makes them less desirable for things like freighter conversions than the 737 classic or MD80 series. Anyone have any more input?

China Eastern operates (operated?) both V2500 and CFM56.
