What's Wrong With The A330?

Fri Dec 01, 2000 2:40 am

I've read many treads that state the following:

"I don't think the A330-500 has many admirers, given that LH has basically written it off. "

Why is the A330 so unpopular?

The A 330-500 is the proposed A330-200 shrink to replace older A300/310s. LH and SQ (amongst others) were very interested in such aircraft, which would have approximately the A300 passenger capacity and utilize the newest FBW technology and wing efficiency.

Airbus, however, currently involved in many new developments (3XX, 318, 345/6) were reluctant to spend much on a brand-new wing design, so they decided to use the existing A330 wing instead. This would give the proposed aicraft excellent performance and range at the expense of a heavier structure. This heavier aircraft would not be able to perform economically enough on short-to-medium range flights, where LH and SQ use their A300/310s. However, with its range/payload capability it would make an excellent 767-300ER replacement.

It is interesting to see if Airbus will do something about LH and SQ, but I doubt it. The old A300-600R wing is old, and an all-new wing will be very expensive to make (considering that the A300/310 replacement market is not big enough anyway). Plus the fact that some airlines tend to replace their widebodies on short routes with narrowbodies (namely the 753).

The question "Why is the A330 so unpopular?" is somewhat wrong and misleading.

The A330-300 didn't have the success, Airbus had hoped for. So far out of the 300-350 ordered A330 (don't have the exact numbers right at hand) more or less 50% were for the -200, but in only something around 4 years.

Let's take the year 1999 and 2000. In 1999 there were 19 orders for the A332 and 13 for the A333. This year,
69 for the A332 and 28 for the A333. I think, the reason is the better range of the A332 and apparently its overwhelming operating costs. Both factors allow airlines to use this aircraft in a very flexible way.

Now, what you meant was probably, why the A330-500 is so unpopular. Well, the most important was already said. LH, Hapag Lloyd and SQ want a replacement for their aging A330/A310, but the proposed A335 - which is developped out of the A332 - has a too long range and is somewhat too heavy.

Hope this helps

Sorry, the numbers for 2000 are wrong. So far 62 A332 and 22 A333 were ordered. In my happyness I counted the QF order double

Sorry and regards
