What's The Deal With Flight 181?

Fri Dec 01, 2000 3:09 am

I was just checking flights out of BOS and noticed that both UA and AA have a Flight 181 leaving BOS for LAX, both at precisely 11:00 AM. Both are operated by 757s. Is there something special about this 181 number, or is it just a coincidence that both airlines have flights leaving at the same time from the same airport to the same destination with the same flight number? I would imagine it might be confusing for ATC and the pilots -- you'd have to listen very closely to the callsign to make sure you're not getting the OTHER Flight 181's orders.

There is nothing mystical that these two flights happen to both be numbered 181. It is just a coincidence. In fact UA's 181 has bounced around as different destinations like MCO-LAX, BOS-SFO and BOS-LAX at 11:00 and at 17:45. On the other hand, AA's 181 has been BOS-LAX for years now. You are right, however, it most likely is a problem with ATC and should be corrected on UA's end.
