Southwest Airlines Newest Aircraft N781WN Made an emergency landing in Albany on 10/15/2000. It is reported that during takeoff at N1 98% The Aircraft suffered Several Bird Strikes and Several Birds were Ingested into the Core of the #1 Engine and some hit the #2 Engine. The Number 1 Engine Vibration Gauge read out was 3.0. At FL 240 it read 4.0. While approaching ALB, There was a Smell reported in the Cabin. Thrust Lever was Reduced to keep the Vibration Level below 4.0.
Maintenance Performed a BIRD STRIKE Inspection and #1 and 2 Engine showed evidence of Core Ingestion. Removed and Replaced #1 Engine Fan Blade Set. Amended SDR 2028. #2 Engine was Also Borescoped and No Damage was Noted. #1 engine had a 10 cycle Flyback when inspected.
Brand New Aircraft. It is a shame that this happened. But it was Not The Best Airline in the world's Fault. It was just Birds in the Area. They did a Good Job Getting this Aircraft back in service
