Continental To Start EWR-BFS/NCL?

Fri Dec 01, 2000 10:12 pm

I read on another forum that CO are thinking about starting a EWR-Newcastle/Belfast International service. Anyone have any idea?

I have a friend that is a captain at CO. The rumor is that Newcastle service will start next spring and probably be announced very very soon. CO is adding service all over the UK from Newark to put pressure on BA to open LHR. COs first choice is service to LHR. In the highly unlikely event that there is movement on this issue in the next 6-8 weeks CO will will use this aircraft for LHR. If not expect an announcement that service to Newcastle will start next year.

Good idea. CO should also consider a seasonal EWR-EDI service and perhaps even a Leeds/Bradford flight. Bermuda II has to be scrapped. It is unfair and
BA should be forced to compete like everyone else, rather than holding on to
the notion that it owns Heathrow. It doesn't.

I guess it will be operated by 757. Things are looking up for NCL now then.

ContinentalEWR, Idont think CO will have service to LBA because its too close to Manchester, theres about 30miles between them.

I sure hope they start flying to NCL. I wouldn't mind if they used something bigger then a 757 either.

CO is rumored to have a MAJOR European expansion coming up over the next few years. Scandinavia, Germany and the UK has been mentioned as key areas.
With smaller aircrafts like 757 and 767-200 in their fleet it is not a bad idea feeding traffic from 'seconary markets' into their hub at EWR.

Continental is not quite the biggest US carrier in Europe. Delta has the largest
transatlantic operations, from its JFK, ATL, and CVG gateways.

American is probably second (not in cities served, but through the number of
passengers it flies into London Heathrow).

Continental is probably third and closing in on AA. It serves more cities in the
Europe than any other US airline other than Delta.

Rounding out the top 10 are United, US Airways, Northwest, and TWA.

Great news about CO into NCL if it comes off. I'd like to think that some other 'big' airlines will follow in their footsteps, or should that be 'flightpath'.
It'll be great to get an airline like CO flying in here to the north-east.
The sooner the better ! ! !

I can't see CO operating into NCL. The market just isn't big enough. Summer only at a push.

I have heard a lot about CO and UK routes recently, Aparently they have been looking at a lot of the UK regional airports with the possibility of using the 757.
The management at Bristol Airport have been in discussions for over a year with CO about a daily EWR service with a 757.

You will be surprised to find that Newcastle has a very large catchment area , from EDI in the nOrth, to SW Scotland inthe west and as far down as York in the South. I would say this is sufficient enough for a EWR service to be profitable. This area is nearly, if not bigger than GLA.

A CO 757 puts around 127,000 seats into the market. With load factors on average US routes at around 70%+, that equals 89,000 passengers. Can you seriously expect NCL to deliver this number of pax, of which around 15% of them will need to be paying £2,000 to sit up front?

I haven't heard anything about either city, but I have heard about using the new 767-200 to open up Scandanavia..I know we're starting Newark to Stansted service..and there are plans to open up more in South America with the 767-400..but what do I know, I just Dispatch whatever and wherever they want me to...

I've hear likewise from a few sources .. the 767-200 should be a good size for CPH/ARN/OSL ..

To revert to the original topic, it was about 757 ops to NCL/BFS so NCL would only need to supply 45000 seats - and with the catchment area mentioned, that shouldn't really be too much of a problem if CO's marketing people do their job well.

The 4 daily SAS nonstops from Scandinavia to EWR are doing well, so I think there will be a good market for CO operating into EWR from here. Delta offer daily flights from ARN to JFK too and they are doing fine as well!
