It's pretty simple (let's hope I get this right I'm winging this folks)

Airlines only have to pay damages if they:

a) File a claim (injury, etc.)
b) a passenger is killed and the damages go to the family members

There may have been payment to some on board the flight, but if nobody claimed injuries and such there was no payment (there may have been free flight vouchers at least  )

Cause of the accident eventually fell to the airline due to clear ice that formed on the upper side of the wings, and SAS' procedures were deemed inadequate. The clear ice broke off the wings and were ingested by the engines, which caused them to flame out and the plane to crash.

Head in the clouds... yet feet planted firmly on the ground.

You're right. Unless there is an injury claim filed by the passengers, the airline is only obligated to pay damages if there were fatalities.

Did the pax get at least the fare of the ticket back? It is obvious that the airplane never got to the intended destination...
