Singapore Airlines Concordes?

Sun Dec 03, 2000 2:21 am

I thought that BA and AF were the only airlines to ever have Concordes, but then I came across this picture:

Did anyone else than AF. BA or SQ operate the Concorde?

How long did SQ operate it for?

SIA and BA shared a Concord a period of time. (Not sure how long.) I think one side was painted BA colors, other painted SIA.

There was SQ/BA joint concorde service in 1976. It only last for half-year with BA/SQ colour on each side. The flight was Singapore to London via a city in the middle east (I'm not sure). Before the flight was launched, it was rejected by Malaysian government because of noise...

Then, SQ/BA found out that the demand on this route was pretty low, so they just halted this route.

BTW, in SQ's inflight magazine "Silver Kris" , they did mentioned about the joint concorde service in the 70s.

1977:

26th October: Singapore Airlines announced an agreement had been made with British Airways for a London to Singapore, via Bahrain Concorde
service to operate 3 return services a week.

9th December: British Airways and Singapore Airlines began the London to Singapore via Bahrain service.

13th December: The Malaysian government banned Concorde from its airspace, thus causing the London to Singapore service to be suspended after only 3 return flights.

1979:

24th January: The British Airways and Singapore service from London to Singapore via Bahrain resumed.

1980:

1st November: The British Airways and Singapore Airlines Concorde service to Bahrain and Singapore was discontinued.

i took that concorde in dec 79 and then back to london late jan 80...
it took approx 3 1/2 hours to bahrain and then another 3 1/2 to singapore...give or take a bit..

i recall how fantastic it seemed to cut the travel time from london -singapore virtually in half...

it was my first time to asia and had always dreaded the idea of super long flights...my home base is new york....

i find that notion funny today as i usually go out of my way to fly on CX because of the service and the sleeper seats, i find longer flights are less tiring, so i try to find an excuse to go to europe via HKG
(and yes i think SQ if fantastic too, but i am wedded to oneworld)
and the Around The World fares are much less expensive...

on the return i remember how strict SQ was regarding overweight baggage on that leg of the trip ...
i had just spent a month in china which was especially exciting for americans in a just re-opened US/CHINA relationship ....and had bought many inexpensive but bulky items, which after being charged half again the cost of my ticket for a couple of extra bags became very expensive goodies...

Braniff has used Concorde as an extention from New York to Dallas in the late seventies/early eightys.

Didn't JAL have a few Concordes on order? Right up to the point of having the things painted and ready to deliver?

It was British Airways Concorde G-BOAD that had the Dual Livery.

ONLY Air France and British Airways owned the Concorde, whereas Singapore airlines operated the above mentioned joint venture flights together with British Airways (1976-1980), one side painted in BA colours, the other in SQ colours.

Furthermore, Braniff signed for some Concordes with Aerospatiale/BAC, however, this contract was cancelled later on. Worth to mention, anyway, that Braniff (prematurely) printed airline postcards showing photo montage pictures of "the Braniff Concorde" due to commence services...! This never took place. By the way, Singapore Airlines issued several airline postcards of the Concorde as well.

Another colour scheme applied to Concorde was that special Pepsi promotion tour aircraft.

That's it. Hope this helps.
