Dirtiest And Least Accomadating Airport?

Sun Dec 03, 2000 11:29 am

What is the dirtiest and least accomodating airport that you have ever been to? Mine is Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (SJD.) There was 1 terminal and it was tight and hot. And 1 bathroom. Thankfully they are building a terminal for only Mexican airlines (Mexicana and Aero Mexico.) Wow, oh boy!

I agree with N312RC
Detroit is a horrible airport. I was there to change flights. The terminals were dimly lit, the was trash recepticles over flowing, the windows were coverd in some sort of stuff. That is the dirtiest place I have probably ever been in my whole life. I like Northwest Airlines and I wish they would get out of such a trash pit place like KDTW.

Just wait til they get it all fixed up a few years from now. From preliminary drawings, it looks good.

The new DTW terminal should be completed by 2002, I think. The worst airport I've ever been to is Kansas City International. Old-style terminal, with very dirty windows and a very bad odor inside.

DTW and all of LGA except the new Marine Terminal as well as most of the old JFK Terminals along with Termainals A B. I really love C though it's great. This opinion comes directly from a native New Yorker.

The HHH charter terminal at MSP is probably the worst. There are no windows so you can't watch air traffiic and there are only 2 restaurants and one info kisok, and none of these are any thing special. But thankfully it is being replaced in Janurary with a state of the art charter terminal with eight gates and windows.

I think Cleveland and St. Louis are disgusting. They're both dirty, dark, and crowded, and lack airport services such as restaurants and the such.

Thw US Airways Terminal at LaGuardia is very nice as well, in my opinion.

DTW is sure up there on the list, however I would add:
ATL: overcrowded, pain to change on DL if tight cnxn.

Dorval..Not impressed at all(6 yrs ago)

MAD..Not that impressed with Barajas for a Capital city.

TPA..Needs a good shot of lysol to kill the mildew!

The DTW Midfield Terminal (exclusively for NW and NW partners) will be completed in December 2001. It is right on schedule, and promises to be one of the finest terminals in all of the world.

I meant T A and B were dirty not C. C is alot better because CO has done alot with the termianl like added more stores as well as remdeled more than half the terminal. A and B looks like it hasn't been remodled or cleaned up in awhile. I'm also a big fan of T4 at LHR and I hope the new T5 will be completed at LHR within a few years.

Fact Sheet From NW/Midfield Terminal

Sun Dec 03, 2000 3:34 pm

OK, lo siento, I know this makes this thread take even longer to load, but I just found this fact sheet at nwa.com about the new Detroit Midfield Terminal that should prove helpful...and it's pretty interesting.

Northwest Airlines and Wayne County Detroit Midfield Terminal Building Project -- as of March 3, 1999

The Midfield Terminal Building project consists of:

Terminal Building

Luggage curbside check-in positions at departure level versus 7 at Davey Terminal.
Domestic and international ticketing positions.
Domestic luggage claim with 11 large luggage carousels.
International luggage claim with 7 large luggage carousels.
Federal Inspection Services.
East Concourse

66 jet arrival/departure gates including 14 gates to accommodate widebody aircraft (10 configured for international arrivals and departures).
Two red, bullet-shaped people mover trams to take passengers from one end station of the concourse to the other in 2 and 1/2 minutes.
One and a half miles of moving sidewalks -- unassisted walking distance between farthest gates will be reduced by more than half compared to existing terminal.
Average of eight minutes to get from an aircraft to the baggage claim area.
International arrivals will accommodate 3,200 passenger/hour in 2005 and 3,600 passengers/hour by 2020.
West Concourse

Jet arrival/departure gates.
Commuter arrival/departure gates.
Concessions, rest rooms and other amenities on the departure level.
Other Features

A 700-foot tunnel connecting the East Concourse with the West Concourse featuring moving walkways and art-glass walls with lighting effects.
Four Northwest WorldClubs with 36,000 square feet of facilities.
Concession area featuring 125,000 square feet of retail space (an increase from 55,000 square feet at the current complex).
Terminal Building is 2,000,000 square feet.
37-foot ceilings in main East Concourse increasing to 64 feet in the mall linking the ticketing area and East Concourse.
Interior accents with porcelain tile and metal panels on walls; Detroit pewabic accent tile in core areas; stainless steel cladding on columns, terrazzo floors on East Concourse corridors and Terminal Building public areas.
New Midfield Terminal to open late 2001; designed by SHG, Inc. a Detroit-based firm.

The worst airports I have ever been in are Arkhangelsk and Kotlas, both in Russia. My favorite airports are Lappeenranta in Finland and Altenrhein in Switzerland, both tiny, but somehow cute. No busses, no jetways, less than 50 meters walk form the parking lot to the plane.

Moscow Sheremetvo 2. That is probbably the most cramped and dirtiest airport that Ive been to (out of the majors) The customs also sucks. Im glad that a few foreign aircompanies are thinking of going to Domodedovo instead. Domodedovo Is having alot of changes made.

I'm amazed no one has said PHL yet-no good food service, average baggage time for us 1 hr. 15. mins about from the time we deplane, and the US ground staff, which apparently accidentally got sent to Marine Boot Camp instead of US Training College.

I enjoy flying through PHL. It has all the usual food joints set up at food court there. It doesn't offer fine dining like some other airports, but I'd rather grab a quick bite. Food court is nice and bright and they got a decent mall. I think BOS is the worse- has anyone tried to move from terminal to terminal on foot? It has the most screwed up terminal layout ever.

I guess it would be Cairo international and Athens "Olympic Airways" East Terminal which is disgusting. I hope when they open their new airport in sPATA IN 2001 IT WILL BE BETTER.

I would have to say San Juan LMN. The terminal C is embarrasing for all of us Puerto Ricans . The tourist take this as there first impression and in this terminal we get the flights fro Europe and TWA and Continental flights.

NWA Man, I'm on your side!

DTW isn't that bad. It can be fixed up, which! After the **NEW** NWA terminal is built (so, I guess you can talk while you can), DTW may build an all new 41-gate terminal for the current airlines over the now present Smith/Davey Terminal, BUT it is going to cost $430 million, they only have budgeted so far- $230 million for existing renovations. They are asking for investments from current airlines. I can see SWA (they built the current 6 gate terminal extension), UAL, and NK investing money, and maybe Delta.

I say, build it! Raise parking rates- whatever. And maybe we (ATA) can take over the current International Building (will become the Charter Terminal). [Just a thought. "ATA Charter Terminal"]

In my opinon, the worst part about the current terminals, is the baggage claim of the Smith Terminal! Now that is something!

DETROIT METRO!!!!!!!!
By far is the worst, no offense to those who actually like DTW, but it is way too outdated. I mentioned in July that I was hit by one of those people mover golf carts, and I got yelled at for it, need I say more.
Hopefully the new Midfield Terminal will help.

Try Goa Dabolim. A military airfield which gives permission for charters during the summer! Last visit there were four 300+ PAX flights checking in via 6 check in desks and only 3 passport checking desks! We were there three hours before departure and boarded the plane 5 minutes before with no time spent in the departure lounge, just one long three hour queue! Imagine 1200 passengers in an area large enough for about 200 with one toilet, 30 deg heat and no aircon.

Most airports in India are wretched. They are run by the infamous IAAI, yet another miserable arm of the miserable Indian government. I was in Goa 4 years ago on a scheduled flight from Bombay during which time 4 charters from Germany and Scandinavia arrived. That little dirty airport could barely handle 3 737s. I wonder what happened to the over 1200 bedraggled tourists who fell out of the charter DC-10s. Guess they had the same experience you did !

OE-LDA and Sushka, you are the only ones here who knows the right answer...   Has anybody of you, guys, been at the airports of Gorky? Omsk? Tbilisi? (who doesn't know - former USSR). May be something has changed there, but in the 80's it was horrible beyond any description. I was really ROTFL reading "DTW, LGA, old JFK, ..."

Penang - Malay - has the odour of urine throughout - though worth the suffering for the experience of the isle.
