How Long Before US UA DL HP WN Etc Retire The 732?

Mon Dec 04, 2000 7:24 am

All those airlines i mentioned are operating near 30 year old Boeing 737-200s. These aircraft are now almost unseen in Europe. When do they plan to be retired? Operations like Delta Express and Metrojet wont have a fleet 5 years from now. Speaking of which, what aircraft will be used for Delta Express and Metrojet?

Isn't Delta replacing them with 738's, or is that Delta Shuttle?

Many think that Delta's 737-200s are all 20-30 years old, but in reality they aren't. Most if not all of Delta's 737-200ADVs are only 12-13 years old and will be serving the Express fleet for 5-10 more years until being phased out for most likely the 737-600.

WN is retiring them as the leases expire (next 19 months)
US is expected to retire the 732 fleet in mainline this year and Metrojet next year (The Metrojet fleet will be 733)
DL has no firm plans to retire the 732 in the Express fleet except for 2 nonstandard aircraft that are being retired this year.

HP will gradually remove them over the next 2 years. (gone by YE 2002)

I have no idea about UA. I would assume that they will be replaced by the A319/A320 birds gradually.

As DeltaAir correctly pointed out the 73S's currently in use are some of the youngest around. Some of Delta's are actually younger than their 737-300's.

UA has retired all of their original 737-222s, what remain are about 30 ex-Frontier 737-291As.

America West is replacing all of their 737-200s, which are all ex-Ansett 737-277A's, with the A318 starting in late 2002/early 2003.

Currently United has no replacment for the 737-291s. Infact, from what my dad told me, they are HMVing them again, so they should be here for atleast three or four more years. They may replace them with newer 737s, or even possibly new NG 737s. I dont know if that will happen. On the longer, transcon flights is where you will see Airbusses.

As others have stated, these aircraft are no where near 30 years old. Delta had their last 732 delivered in 1987, making it 13 years old. Southwest had 732's delivered through 1985. US had deliveries through 1984 and United had new ones until 1982. If you want specific delivery dates, go to :

What on earth are you talking about? Most of those still in frontline service were built between the late 70s and mid 80s. The production of the -200 didn't end till 1988. While they are a bit loud, there's nothing wrong with them...and they have been reliable.

Delta is using the 738 as a 727 replacement, not a 732 replacement. The 738 holds 140-160 pax, the 732 holds 100-110 pax.

LOL! 737 holding 140-160 passengers? A 757 holds 160 (Although some go up towards 200). How can a smaller aircraft hold the same? Anyways- thanks for the infor everyone.

Sorry About That Last One

I was wrong about the 757. It is more of 180-240. Anyways, Im not too sure about the 737-800 being 160 passengers.

Actually TWA902fly, 160 is correct. I just checked Delta's website and their 738's carry 154 passengers (16F, 138Y). Some airlines carry more and less, but 160 is definitely feasible.

Once again, as we have previously discussed, United has NO plans to buy 737NGs to replace its 732s. But they will rather focus on the A319/320 as its low-capacity aircraft.

Having said that, all of America West's 732s were built in 1981-82, before the airline started, and will all be replaced by the A318 when it comes out in 2003.
