What Is Your Favorite Defunct Airline?

Mon Dec 04, 2000 10:29 am

Because I'm bored and to take a break from a PowerPoint presentation I am doing, I'll set up a little poll:

What's your favorite defunct airline?

Mine are Eastern and the original Midway Airlines.

Braniff (the original).

And "Apple" (New York Air) isn't exactly defunct; it was just absorbed into the main carrier (Continental) of the company that started it in the first place- Texas Air.

People Express And Piedmont!

Mon Dec 04, 2000 11:43 pm

People Express and Piedmont share the honors for me. People Express liberated my hometown, Rochester New York, from high airfares in 1985 and drove traffic up 38 percent in one year. People Express made the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 reality for millions of people in medium-size markets like Rochester. And the employees were a hoot too.

Piedmont was a just plain good airline. They offered very good nonstop (LGA, EWR, BWI, BOS, JFK) and connecting schedules at Rochester, clean planes, reasonable fares, and friendly employees. God bless President Reagan, but he really blew it by allowing US Air to snap Piedmont up and destroy mainline regional competition at Rochester. We've paid the price ever $ince.

1. Pan Am, simply for being THE legend

2. Interflug, due to my fascination with the cold war and all things DDR

3. Piedmont, for all the reasons Jim (DCA-ROC guy) mentioned above. What an ambitious move for a mid-sized regional to start Charlotte-London services.

1. First, foremost, and always: Braniff (the original). I miss their colorful planes, their Texas attitude, their FAs' uniforms, and most of all "The Great Pumpkin". Some days I can almost see a BN 727 on final to DCA out my office window.

2. Pan American World Airways. Does anyone else believe as I do that when they went to the bold "PAN AM" scheme that they lost their identity? I loved their 707's in blue and white. I wish I could have flown on one of them before they disappeared.

3. US Airways. I'm starting early. (small joke!)

I have to agree with BostonBeau, I really miss the Northeast Yellowbirds - my first ever commercial flight was on one of their DC-9-30's.

I also really miss the original National Airlines. They were a class act all the way. I think their yellow and orange sun livery really looked great on their DC-8's.

Braniff International - Just think what DFW would be like in this day and age had BI still been around

Texas International - I personally think Continental should be re-renamed Texas International.

American Overseas Airways - Just think what AA would be like if they had held on to this valuable asset instead of selling out to PA.

I remember they had a hub here in San Juan . So they had a great amount of activity . There planes looked awsome especially the A-300. I just wish I could have had the opportunity to flown them.

VC10 - you am de coolest; what great pix.

For me, it has to be Republic Airlines. I lived near Minneapolis 1982-1987, and (hey, much as I LOVED Northwest Orient) those white and blue DC-9s really broke up the monotony over Lake Minnetonka.

Oh, and BCal.

And Laker. When I taxied out to the runway on NWA's flt. 45 from LGW-MSP on 28/03/1982, we went (in our 747-100 - yesss!) past a row of grounded-through-bankruptcy Laker DC-10s. Years later Virgin tried it and won, but that didn't save the 747 that was pots-n-pans'ed at Kemble.

Contrail; I belive the bold PAN AM scheme looked great on the 727-200 as well as the smaller planes in their fleet. But doing it on a PA 747 looked dull because the cheatline was gone leaving a huge amount of white space. However the bold titles did look good on the A300s and A310s

4) Eastern.....Lorenzo should have been strung up
5) Piedmont.....great local service carrier

2) National...such an interesting and colorful air carrier

I have a definite western bias, growing up in California. The first airline that I ever flew on was Air California (on their 737-200 San Jose to Orange Co.) when I was just 8 years old. I had a great time. I was sorry to see them go.

I also used to love to see my uncle arrive in San Jose from LAX on PSA's smiling 727's. I can still remember his planes waving farewell (i.e., rudder check during taxiing) on their departure.

Finally, Reno Air, with its fleet which included MD-87's and MD-90's, will be sorely missed by me in a fleet world increasingly dominated by Boeing and Airbus.

I would have to say that PANAM is my favorite defunct airline. My first trip was on a PANAM 707-300 from New York to Dakar, Senegal. My family traveled to and from Africa several times on PANAM. My first 747 flight was on PANAM. I was only 6 years old at the time. We had to board the aircraft via ramp/stairs. It was very impressive to me as a little boy to walk out to that massive airplane. The image is forever burnt into my memory. It was sad to see such a great pioneering airline go bankrupt. When PANAM left Africa, direct service by a US airline was lost.

I'm gonna have to agree with DCA-ROC guy.
People Express was to EWR what SW is to the entire US. EWR was a failing airport until PeopleExpress came in and turned it all around. In one year EWR was expanding and sprawling all over the place. I think they grew a little too big for their britches to quickly though..

great airline

Havent flown many, but Reno Air, recently gobbled up by American in 1999 was great. What other airline could you fly on and upgrade to first class for sometimes as little as $39? And, their fleet of MD-90s, so quiet and new, was an added bonus.

#1. Reno Air. Never flew with them, but they helped to keep fares in check in Anchorage. Then American bought them out.   Cut 3 daily flights to one red-eye. Then American decided to stop year-round SEA-ANC service.

#2. Mark Air. Flew them once on a school trip in 6th grade to Anchorage from Ketchikan. They nearly cut fares from Ketchikan in half while they had service there. But Alaska had them out of their "bread and butter" monopoly airports (Sitka and Ketchikan) in less then a year.

I flew on this aircraft in 1982 on a JFK-LGW. Service was outstanding!

Honorable mentions:
Piedmont: Reasonable fares, friendly service
Laker: The spirit of Sir Freddie. Good service overall

The two best defunct airlines are in decending order.
1) North Central FLY HERMAN!

2) Rebublic -a great airline before the hostile NWA take over j/k.

but honistly you cant get better then a northcentral DC-3 or DC-9, or Convair 580!
