Numerous times in the past, almost exclusively to Argentina or London from Sao Paulo, using the old DC-10's and 747's.

The Brazilian people (including myself, I was born there  ) are the kindest and most fun-loving people I have met. This was reflected by the cabin crew, who always went out of their way to make sure we never went hungry/thirsty on a flight-sounds strange today, but it was true; they were a pleasure to fly with.

They were numerous delays-but in retro-respect we were never in a rush anyway. Their livery was and is very nice.

In the days when BA used to be known as "Bloody Awful" (80's) we often flew RG to LHR.

I was too small really to take any notice of First Class or whatever, but the crew on BA really gave me a bollocking for not eating anything on one of their flights, so I didn't like them very much!

I used to see these Electra's at Congonhas all the time; the threshold of the r/w was always visible at the crest of a slope from the highway. Never got to fly in one

I used to fly on these all the time, down to Buenos Aires

And a MUCH better alternative to BA on the Brazil-UK routes in the 80's

I agree with all of you that Varig's service is quite superb compared to other airlines. Most Brazilians are very easygoing, relaxed, liberal people, and Varig's workers portray these attitudes very well. One time, specifically, on a flight from Rio to Atlanta(RG 855-no more), I was quite hungry, and the flight attendant simply gave me two servings, without any problem. He even wanted to give me a third one, but it was enough. True, Varig's punctuality may not be the best, but, I guess it's all part of the Brazilian experience...you better get used to it! Thanks, Varig, for such a great airline, and wish you continued success in the coming years. If you were interested in other Brazilian carriers:
VASP: facing severe financial difficulties, and has cut all int'l routes and many domestic routes. Really not in the best of times. Had a short-lived alliance with CO.
Transbrasil: Having its ups and downs. Still offers some int'l routes, but has also cut alot of them. Pulled out of the famous Ponte Aerea(Air Bridge) between Rio and Sao Paulo because of competition. Pretty much operating on a no-loss, no-gain operation.
TAM:has increased its flights drastically both domestically and internationally. They fly now daily to Miami using modern Airbus jets (A330?), and also to JFK, I believe. TAM is growing and is quite sucessful, but I have heard that some of their purchases(new planes, new routes), may be a little too quick and they may be growing too quickly. They have been triggered with some tragic plane crashes is Brazil, too. Overall, a good, successful Brazilian airline.

The 777 will look gorgeous in Varig's colors... Definitely worth the id90 to go for a ride on it.

TAM flies to MIA (2x daily), and to Paris (daily) with A330-200. They have just been awarded authority for daily flights to Madrid and Frankfurt, a 3rd daily for GRU-MIA a daily BSB-MAO-MIA, one more flight a week to Paris and 5 daily to Buenos Aires. It is also planing to operate 2 daily flights to Montevideo, but that is still pending government aproval. All these routes are already operated by Varig (exeption of the BSB-MAO-MIA)

Varig on the other hand was given permission to increase frequencies to Germany (3 more flights a week), Spain (3 more a week), Italy (1 more a week), the USA (one daily) and to Canada (6 times a week).
