Mid 20th Century Liveries To Return

Fri Dec 08, 2000 5:22 am

I was just thinking to myself wouldn't it be great if all the airlines decided for one year to repaint all their aircraft in the companies original paint scheme.
AA did it with the flagship 757, Air Canada did it with one of their A319's and I loved both the schemes, very smart !
I'd love to see Aer Lingus put an A330 in the livery that their Connies were in in the 1950/60's

What are your thoughts ?

That sounds like an interesting idea, and I agree. A 330 painted in the old EI colour scheme would be very nice.

Frankly, I dont know why this isn't a more popular marketing move among airlines. A repaint in retro colors attracts attention and demonstrates the long history of an airline-a trait generally associated with success. I think it's a cheap way to garner some good PR. Imagine:
an SAS Dragon-head A320
a BOAC 744
a BEA A319
a TWA "Double globe" 717

I would love to see a "777 Friend Ship". I hope United does one!

The TW 717 with the "double globe" would be nice, but imo it would look better on a 757. Or how about a NW 747 in the old colors, with "NORTHWEST ORIENT" on the side? Or maybe a DC-9 in the old Republic livery? How about a DL 738 in the old Wester livery?

Lots of possibilities!

Man, I would be in heaven! I would like to see a JAL 777 in old colors, an old colored AC A-330, that would be great to see. This would also be good marketing too to get older travelers who used to fly in the 50's and 60's but don't anymore. Seriously, this would be good marketing. It would be funny to go to the airport and see modern aircraft with past liveries, man this would be interesting.

You know, doing a "retro" livery wouldn't be such a bad idea after all!

Here's some airlines that ought to paint one plane in an older livery:

United Airlines (use the livery done in the 1960's)
Northwest Airlines (use the livery done in the 1960's)
Japan Airlines (use the livery done in the 1960's)
Cathay Pacific Airways (use the livery done in the 1960's)
British Airways (paint a 747-400 or 777-200ER in the 1960's BOAC livery and paint an A320 in the 1960's BEA livery)

Gee, I wonder why airline liveries in the 1960's seemed so much more interesting?

Hmmm...I'd love to see the BOAC and BEA colours plying the skies again.

I'd love to see Japan TransOcean Air repaint a 767-200 in the (Japanese) Southwest Airlines livery.

I think AA and AC should repaint their aircraft so that half the fleet is in a retro scheme, and the other half is in the scheme they have now. I would love to see how a 777 looks in the thunderbolt, and how an A340 looks in the TCA.

I'd like to see airlines that have been around for many years paint one copy of every livery they have had since the beginning of their existance on a current new aircraft.. maybe even the same aircraft type only. Imagine British Airways, Lufthansa, Qantas, Air Canada, Varig or United with about anywhere from a half dozen to a dozen different looks over the years.. it would be neat to see them all lined up side by side with the retro images on a new A340, 777 or 747... BOAC-look 777, Trans Canada Airlines-look A340, Qantas V-Jet-look 767 etc.. It would be a goodway to pay tribute to the heritage of the airline as well as the people that helped them get to where they are today.

This is an excellent idea! I would love to USAirways start flying Piedmont colors on 767's again, even a few "Smile Liners" of PSA ocming into and out of PHL would be nice. I MISS THE SMILE!! All though i never got to see one except on a MetroJet bird. US has lots of possibilities! PSA, Allegheny, USAir (brown scheme, and keep a few in the latest USAir scheme), Piedmont...nice!
Delta would be nice to see all there birds, from the beginning, the Delta C&S scheme, Northeast, Western. It would be awesome!
On I would not like to see though...ValuJet. hehehe

Maybe you don't need to wait for JAL's retro scheme. JAL scheme is not changed at all except logo. Even the crane sign on tail is same.

Meanwhile, ANA should look good in old scheme. And most of other Asian carriers are nothing to expect, I think.
